Leaning on Beth

Ella's POV:

It had been one of those days at the hospital. From the minute I stepped in, it seemed like nothing went right. A difficult surgery took twice as long as expected, and then a critical case with a young patient hit too close to home. Even after hours of effort, we barely managed to stabilize them, and I left the OR feeling drained and doubtful. By the time I got to my car, every ounce of energy and optimism felt wrung out of me.

Usually, I'd call Leah, but tonight, I knew I needed someone who understood this part of my life differently. Leah had her own recovery journey, her own battles, and tonight I didn't want her to feel any extra weight on her shoulders. So, I pulled out my phone and texted Beth.

"Are you home?"

A reply came almost immediately. "Yep! Come over. I'll have tea ready."

Beth had always been that friend—the one who understood me better than anyone else. We'd known each other for so long that I didn't have to say much for her to understand when I needed her. Tonight, that meant everything.

When I arrived at Beth's flat, she met me at the door, her usual smile tempered with the knowing look of someone who's seen her friend in rough shape too many times. She didn't say much, just wrapped me in a tight hug, and for a second, I let myself breathe. The comfort of her warmth, her steady presence, was exactly what I needed.

"Come in, sit down," she said, ushering me to her cozy couch, a warm blanket already laid out. She handed me a mug of tea, and we sat in silence for a few moments, Beth's hand resting on my shoulder.

Finally, she spoke, her tone gentle. "Rough one, huh?"

I nodded, gripping the mug. "One of the worst days I've had in a long time. It was just... a lot, you know? Everything that could go wrong did, and I can't shake this feeling that I didn't do enough."

Beth nodded, her gaze understanding. "You're always harder on yourself than anyone else, Ella. You put so much of yourself into your work, and it's amazing, but it's okay to admit when it takes a toll."

I sighed, looking down at my hands. "Sometimes, I feel like I can handle it all, you know? But days like this... they make me question everything. I don't know if I'm strong enough to keep going like this."

Beth scooted closer, her hand covering mine. "Listen, you're one of the strongest people I know. You have a big heart, and you carry so much for other people—your patients, Leah, everyone. But even the strongest people need a break. Let yourself lean on the people who care about you."

I felt my eyes start to burn, and before I knew it, a tear slipped down my cheek. Beth gently brushed it away, not saying anything, just letting me feel what I needed to feel. The weight of everything started to spill over, the exhaustion, the worry, the self-doubt. And for once, I didn't try to hold it back.

"Thank you," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "For always being there."

"Of course," she said, squeezing my hand. "That's what best friends are for."

After a While

We sat there for what felt like hours, Beth patiently listening as I vented about the day, my frustrations, and my fears. She knew when to just listen and when to step in with her gentle wisdom. By the end of it, I felt a little lighter, like some of the weight had finally lifted.

"Alright," Beth said, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Enough of the heavy stuff. How about we lighten things up a bit? I have the perfect thing."

She disappeared into the kitchen and returned with a small container of ice cream and two spoons. "You, me, and a rom-com marathon," she declared, handing me a spoon.

I laughed, a real laugh, for the first time all day. "You always know exactly what I need."

We spent the next couple of hours devouring ice cream, laughing at old rom-coms, and letting the stresses of the day fade away. Beth's presence was a balm, reminding me that I didn't have to carry everything on my own.

Later That Night

As I got ready to leave, Beth gave me one last, long hug. "Remember, I'm always here, okay? You're not alone in this."

"Thank you, Beth. Really, I don't know what I'd do without you," I replied, my heart full of gratitude.

As I walked back to my car, I felt the warmth of our friendship buoying me, a reminder that I was never as alone as I sometimes felt. Beth had been there for me through every high and low, and tonight she'd been exactly what I needed—a steady presence to help me find my strength again. I knew I'd wake up tomorrow ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, all because I had people in my life who reminded me I didn't have to face them alone.

Beth's POV:

After Ella left my flat, I felt a mixture of relief and worry. I was glad she'd finally opened up to me about everything that had been weighing on her, but I could see how deeply the day had affected her. She was carrying so much, as usual, and while she'd seemed better when she left, I knew she'd need more than just one night to bounce back.

I thought about Leah, Ella's other steady rock, and I knew she'd want to help. As much as I wanted Ella to lean on me, she was in love with Leah, and there was a comfort and closeness there that even our friendship couldn't quite touch. Leah needed to know how much Ella needed her right now, so I grabbed my phone and sent her a quick text.

Beth: "Hey, Leah. Not to worry you, but just a heads-up... Ella had a tough day at work today. We talked, and she's doing a bit better, but I think she could really use you right now. Could you maybe keep an extra close eye on her?"

It didn't take long for Leah to reply, as if she'd been waiting to hear something like this.

Leah: "Oh no, what happened? Is she okay?"

Beth: "Yeah, I think so, but she's carrying a lot on her shoulders. She doesn't always let on how much it weighs on her. She needs some TLC, and you're just the person for it. Maybe plan something quiet with her? You're her safe space."

Leah: "Got it. Thank you for letting me know, Beth. I'll make sure she knows I'm here."

I put down my phone, feeling a sense of relief knowing Leah would be there for Ella. I knew Ella could lean on both of us, but Leah brought her a kind of peace no one else could. The thought of her being in such good hands let me finally relax. As I closed my eyes that night, I felt grateful that we all had each other—through the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
