Alaz clenched his jaw, eyes narrowing as Selma’s dismissive smirk lingered. “Spirited? You’re damn right she is,” he said sharply. “And maybe that’s what bothers you — that Asi actually stands her ground, unlike anyone you’re used to dealing with. But you don’t get to disrespect her just because of whatever fling we had.”

Selma raised an eyebrow, her smirk turning sly. “Oh, come on, Alaz. Don’t tell me you don’t find this sudden engagement strange. One minute you’re a free spirit and now you’re Alaz Soysalan, the devoted fiancé? No rumors, no tabloids, no build-up… makes people wonder.”

“Wonder what, exactly?” Alaz shot back, barely keeping his patience. He knew how to rein himself in, to play the poised Soysalan heir when needed, but she was pushing him to his limits.

“I don’t know,” Selma said, with a mocking casualness. “Maybe that you were out with someone else one night and then suddenly, you’re slapping a ring on this girl’s finger. Are you trying to cover something up, Alaz? Because it sure sounds like it.”

Alaz leaned forward, his gaze piercing. “What I’m trying to do, Selma, is build a life with Asi. That’s what you, or anyone else, need to know. This relationship? This isn’t some rebound or some guilt-ridden impulse. Asi and I… She’s my love, the one who makes me want to be more than just Alaz Soysalan, the guy with a pretty face and a bank account.

“You can say all that, sure. But what about her? Do you think Asi would be proud of you parading around with different women all over town before ‘realizing’ she’s the one? Isn’t that a bit disrespectful to her?”

Alaz exhaled a frustrated sigh, and his voice dropped to a steely tone. “What’s disrespectful, Selma, is assuming Asi’s too naive to know who I am. She knows my past and she chose me anyway. Do you even get that? I never lied to her, never pretended to be someone I wasn’t. I was always straight about my mistakes. That life? It’s over. And I sure as hell don’t owe anyone an explanation — least of all to someone who thinks she can guilt me into doubting my relationship.”

Selma tried to cut in, but he stopped her, raising a hand. “Every woman I was with knew. I never lied, never made false promises. And I sure as hell don’t regret moving on to find what I needed with Asi. I respect you, Selma, I really do. But if you think you can stand here and tear her down just because I didn’t stay single for the rest of my life, you’ve got another thing coming.”

Selma’s lips pressed into a thin line, her voice softening just slightly as she fought to save face. “Fine, Alaz. I get it, okay? You’re ‘in love.’ Good for you. But don’t think you’re some saint just because you’re putting a ring on it. You’ve left a mess behind, one marriage won’t magically erase that.”

Alaz shook his head, keeping his gaze steady on her. “I know damn well what I left behind and, trust me, I’m not proud of it. But every woman who’s been with me has been with her own choice. I respected each one of them, never demeaned or disrespected anyone. But I’ll be damned if I’m going to stand by and let you belittle the one woman who means everything to me.”

For a moment, Selma stood silent, caught off guard. Alaz took a steadying breath, his voice firm but more measured now. “Because I know exactly where I stand and who I’m standing beside.”

Selma’s smirk only widened, enjoying his anger. “Oh, I’ve hit a nerve, haven’t I?” She leaned in slightly, her tone dripping with false sympathy. “It’s clear as day, Alaz. You’re in an arranged marriage. And all this ‘love’ stuff? It’s just to save face. A rich girl, a billionaire heir—perfect way to cover up whatever mess you were dealing with.”
