The car slowed as they approached the grand gates of Murthy Mansion, the long driveway lined with tall, ancient trees casting their shadow over the well-kept gardens. Nandini could feel her heartbeat echoing in her chest, a mix of excitement and anxiety swirling inside her. Her fingers nervously drummed on her lap as she glanced at Manik, who was trying to appear calm but couldn't hide the slight tightness in his jaw.
He parked the car with a practiced ease, but Nandini could see the tension in his posture. He wasn't immune to the nerves, either. For all the love and affection he had for his grandmother, he knew that what was coming next wasn't going to be easy.
Manik turned to her with a soft but encouraging smile. "We're in this together, Nandu," he said, his voice low but steady. "Just remember, you're stronger than you think."
Nandini nodded, taking a deep breath as she stepped out of the car. The weight of the evening ahead was pressing down on her, but she was determined to go through with it. After all, honesty had always been the foundation of her relationship with her grandmother. Even if it was hard, it was time.
They walked toward the mansion together, the door of the grand house looming ahead. Inside, the familiar smells of incense and the soft hum of prayer filled the air as Nandini's heart began to race. She could hear her grandmother's voice, soft and measured, as she prayed in the small temple room near the living area. The temple was a sanctuary of sorts, where Amms would often spend her quiet hours, offering prayers to the gods that had been part of their family for generations.
When they entered, Nandini gently cleared her throat to announce their presence. "Amms, Manik has come to meet you," she called out, her voice wavering slightly despite her best efforts.
Amms, who had been sitting on the low mat near the altar, her hands folded in prayer, turned around slowly. Her face softened as she saw Nandini and Manik standing there. She smiled warmly, her eyes lighting up with affection for her granddaughter, and then she turned to Manik.
"Manik, beta," Amms greeted him, her voice gentle and welcoming. She stood up from the temple floor, walking toward him with a slow, graceful step. Her presence was like a quiet force, dignified yet filled with love.
Manik stood up straight, a little unsure, but his smile was genuine as he stepped forward to meet her. "Namaste, Amms," he said respectfully, bowing slightly.
"You're always welcome here, Manik." Amms smiled, her eyes full of warmth. "Come, sit with me."
They moved to the living room, where Amms motioned for them to sit. Manik and Nandini sat down next to each other, both aware of the momentous nature of what was about to unfold.
For a while, they exchanged pleasantries—talking about the weather, small updates on life. Amms seemed comfortable, but Nandini could sense her growing unease. It wasn't that her grandmother didn't like Manik—she loved him, of course, just as she loved everyone who was good to Nandini. But this felt different. This felt like the edge of something important.
Finally, after a few minutes, Nandini took a deep breath. She could feel Manik's presence next to her, steady and supportive, but this was her moment. This was her truth to tell.
"Amms, I... I need to tell you something," Nandini began, her voice a little shaky. She reached for Manik's hand, squeezing it for support. "Manik and I... we've been together for a year now."
The words hung in the air for a long moment, and it felt as if time itself had frozen. Nandini's chest tightened as she watched Amms' face, searching for any sign of recognition or understanding.
At first, Amms' expression remained neutral, her lips curving into a soft smile as though waiting for Nandini to continue. But as the words began to sink in, the smile faltered, and a flicker of shock passed over her face.
