Manik blinked a few times, his eyes still heavy with sleep as he reached for his phone, trying to shake off the lingering haze of his dreamlike state. The soft sound of Nandini's breathing beside him made him pause. She had shifted closer to him in the night, her body curled into his, her arms wrapped around him in the kind of quiet, protective way that made him feel safe, even when the world outside seemed uncertain. He smiled, watching her for a moment as she mumbled something in her sleep, likely a half-dreamed response to something in her own mind.
She tightened her hold around him instinctively, as if sensing his movement. Manik's smile softened as he gently brushed a strand of hair from her face, careful not to wake her. Despite the weeks of frustration and self-doubt that had piled on him after the rejection from the production house, moments like this being close to Nandini made everything feel a little more bearable. She was his constant, his grounding force.
The phone buzzed again, a sharp reminder of the outside world. Manik rubbed his eyes and glanced down at the unfamiliar number on the screen. He debated for a second before swiping to answer, his curiosity piqued.
"Hello?" he muttered, his voice still thick with sleep.
"Hey, this is Rishi from Symphony Music Studio," came the voice on the other end. Manik sat up a little straighter, instantly more alert as the name registered. Symphony Music Studio—the place where he had done his voice test a week ago. The place that had turned him down with a gentle, but firm, rejection. The same studio where he had tried so desperately to prove himself.
"Rishi!" Manik's voice cracked slightly, still waking up. "What's up?"
"I know it's been a week," Rishi continued, "but we've been listening to your recording again, and honestly, we think we've got a track that might be a good fit for you. It's in your vocal range."
Manik's heart skipped a beat. He blinked, trying to absorb the sudden change of events. He hadn't expected this. After a week of self-doubt, after pushing aside his own hope, hearing these words felt almost surreal.
"Wait, what?" Manik's voice was hoarse as he sat up fully, no longer able to lie back down. "You mean... you want me to record something?"
"Yeah," Rishi responded. "We've got a track we're working on, and after reviewing your test, we believe your voice would be a good fit. It's a love song, and it could be a great match for your style. I'll text you the timings and details soon. Sound good?"
Manik's mind was racing now, his heart thundering in his chest. This is it. This could be the chance I've been waiting for. But before he could say anything more, he heard a soft sigh next to him. Nandini shifted slightly, her face still hidden in the pillow but her hand brushing against his arm. He paused, looking at her, and felt a rush of warmth flood through him. She was still asleep, unaware of the call, but her presence had always been the one thing that kept him grounded when everything else felt uncertain.
"Okay," Manik said after a beat, trying to contain his excitement. "Yeah, sounds great. Thanks, Rishi. I'll keep an eye out for the message."
"No problem," Rishi replied, the sound of typing coming through on the other end. "We'll send over the details soon. Looking forward to seeing you."
With a click, the line went dead. Manik stared at his phone for a moment, letting the reality of what had just happened sink in. They actually want me. They want me to sing.
His heart raced, the joy of this unexpected call bubbling up inside him. But at the same time, there was a lingering sense of disbelief. The last few days had been hard, he had questioned his worth, his future in music, and whether it was all worth the struggle. This phone call, though, had reignited something in him. A tiny flame of hope flickered, and for the first time in what felt like forever, he allowed himself to believe that maybe, just maybe, this was his moment.
