I ( Sophia) stared blankly at my computer screen, job search websites blurring together.
Just as I was about to give up, my phone rang.
"uncle Jin's voice"
My heart skipped a beat when my phone rang, displaying “Uncle Jin” on the screen. I answered quickly, hoping for good news.
“Sophia, I have something for you,” Uncle Jin’s warm voice came through. “My friend Karen runs an immigration office called Global Pathways Institute. They offer IELTS, PTE, and spoken English training. I think you should try there for the PTE trainer job.”
My eyes lit up. “Really? That sounds perfect! Thank you so much, Uncle.”
“I’ll send you Karen’s number. Call him and set up an appointment,” Uncle added.
“Okay, will do.”
After ending the call, I immediately dialed Karen’s number. My hands were slightly shaky, a mix of nerves and excitement coursing through me.
“Hello, Global Pathways Institute, Karen speaking,” a calm voice answered.
“Hi, Mr. Karen. This is Sophia. My uncle, Jin, referred me. I’m looking for a PTE trainer position,” I said, trying to sound confident.
“Ah, yes, Jin told me about you. Can you come by tomorrow at ten for an interview?” Karen replied.
“Yes, of course. Thank you so much!” My heart leapt with hope.
The next morning, I prepared nervously for the interview. I didn’t know how to drive, so my little brother, Jake, offered to drop me off.
As we drove through the busy streets, my nerves bubbled under the surface. “Thanks for driving me, Jake,” I said softly.
Jake grinned. “No problem, Soph. You’ll do great.”
When we reached the location, Jake pulled over. “Here we are. Good luck!” he said, giving me a thumbs-up before driving away.
I glanced around and noticed another building across the street with a nearly identical name to Global Pathways, differing only by one letter. Panic flickered in my mind, but I pushed it aside and stepped inside the building in front of me.
It wasn’t until I entered that realization struck me — I had left my phone at home. “No, no, no,” I muttered, patting my pockets desperately. I turned around to wave down Jake, but his car had already disappeared down the road.
Fear gripped me, and tears pricked my eyes. What if this was the wrong place? What if I missed my chance at the job I so desperately needed?
Unsure of what to do, I stood frozen as uncertainty clouded my mind. Was this the end of my opportunity, or would fate have something unexpected in store for me?
