Between Us

Introduction

Jayden had always been the quiet kid in class, the one who would get lost in his notes and textbooks, especially in chemistry. It was the one subject where he could truly shine, the equations and reactions coming naturally to him in a way nothing else did. But despite his talent, he kept his head down, staying out of the spotlight. He wasn't the kind of guy who drew attention to himself, even if his skills made it seem like he could.

Then there was Konner. Konner wasn't exactly bad at chemistry, but he definitely struggled more than most. His desk was usually littered with crumpled papers and half-finished problems, his bright smile never quite matching his frustration with the subject. He was funny, though. That was something Jayden noticed immediately. Konner had a way of making the hardest parts of class seem a little lighter, cracking jokes at just the right moments to ease the tension.

When the seating chart shifted, Jayden found himself sitting next to Konner in fourth-period chemistry, a pairing neither of them saw coming. They didn't know each other—yet—but Jayden could feel the change in the air. It was awkward at first, the silence between them punctuated by Konner's lighthearted attempts to make sense of the lesson, but somehow, they made it work. Neither of them knew it yet, but this accidental partnership might just be the start of something neither of them could have predicted.
