Hello, I am a Gen Z teen. I listen to crime documentaries, journal, go to the movies, trick or treat, read books, and buy CDs. I live in America, the greatest country in the world. The land of the free. Expect I don't feel free anymore. I am scared. I am scared for the future, for my rights and my ability to live a stable life. This county is very important to me. I am not going to try and stay neutral because I believe we are in danger. However, I am not going to shit on any group of people. (Besides Donald Trump and maybe white men as a whole.) Everyone deserves to be heard and respected. We are all humans, and we all have to share the same earth.
We all live in the same world. I think that is something everybody fails to understand. We as a country cannot see outside of ourselves. I will be the first to say that I find it hard to look at another person and imagine what they are going through. I cannot relate to every person, and that's ok. We all go through different things, but we are connected under one thing.
Human rights.
Everyone has the same rights; we don't have to all look the same, have the same interests, or even like each other. But we all have the same rights. After this election, I can say for sure that we no longer have the same rights. There is nothing holding us together. Is that not terrifying? How do you keep going through your everyday life knowing that everything you have control over is going to be ripped away from you? I am struggling. I am so afraid. Donald Trump is going to do whatever gets him more power and money. How can people not see that?
As a teen, you would think politics are the last thing on my mind. You would be wrong. Since 2020, I have been politically aware. After the January 6 attempt to overthrow the American government, orchestrated the former president Donald Trump. I had to go to school, like every other American student. Except my class was interrupted by the event. We spent the whole day talking about what this means for the country and why the military refused to do anything for hours. I describe this event as my generation's challenger space shuttle, or 911. Somehow the rest of the country did not think the same way as me. They praised this event, this event in which the government failed to protect us against white men. Because news flashes, the government is not here to protect us from white men; the government is run by them, and they are assholes. They are just as scared as me; they are afraid of me and people like me having control. They can't imagine their life without the "power" they hold right now. They are scared we are going to pants them and see how small their dicks actually are.
I am aware that nothing will ever stay the same. I don't like that politics have a say over basic human rights. Politics are just people's ideas; why do we give so much weight to one person's idea and view of the future but not others? Someone's basic human rights should not be decided by another human. It's just a fact. Unless you have hurt another person, you are worthy of respect and rights. The government wants to take human rights away from us. By having us slowly vote for the removal of our human rights.
If a girl named Jane told a boy named Jack that he could not eat pumpkin pie. And so Jack never ate pumpkin pie. Wouldn't you be mad at Jane? She is not allowing Jack to eat. That's not something she should be in control of. Jane might want to say something like, Jack, you shouldn't eat too much pumpkin pie; you might get sick. But instead she is telling him all together what he can't do. The government should be able to suggest guidelines they deem helpful, but they should never have full control. For example, a government should not be able to ban abortion access, but they should be able to say maybe the rate of abortions is too high and we should help mothers financially support their kids so the population can go back up.
The government has too much power, and even if the people speak up, I think it's too late. We have voted away from democracy, giving it to a man who does not believe in abortions, birth control, immigrants, police brutality, lgbtq+ rights, lowering taxes for the middle/lower class, the education system, and climate change. He believes in lowering taxes for the ultra wealthy, banning Muslims, counting abortion or miscarries as murder, having guns in the classroom, and separating families.
This man is a monster.
Like I said earlier, every person deserves respect and human rights. Trump and his MAGA supporters are going to take that away till eventually they realize they have taken their own rights away. People have been blindsided and brainwashed. They are looking for a leader to think for them, and they just voted him in. Don't think that even for a second he is going to leave after 4 years. Did Hitler leave?
I have friends who might not be allowed to stay in the country for much longer. I know people who might get their marriage rights taken away from them. I have loved people who have had to have abortions before. I know people who have been in shootings before. I have lived through all of this, and I am not even an adult yet. I feel fear because my life has just become good again. I am finally in control of my life, and now the government is going to take it away from me. I have seen my mom crying because she had to ask me and my sister if we would get an IUD so that if they take birth control away, I will be "safe." I think I will say yes. Teenage me should not have to worry about getting an IUD so that if a man rapes me, I can "live my life" without having his baby. This country is falling apart. I don't know how to change it; I can't fix this problem. This is not something I should have to think about.
The country is mourning the loss of human rights.
Sincerely,
your average American teenager.
