Janus found his mind lingering on when Melissa explained pyro-portation to him.
He now understood that it was her atoms that were expanding into a cloud of atomic energy that shrunk with the bit of magecraft Melissa could muster while intangible. He imagined that it would be hard to cast spells without a tangible body, since aura needed to interact with the matter on a large scale. But he decided not to think about it. Perhaps that was a question he'd ask Melissa on her next visit.
Hovering down the stories, Janus stood in the center of the library. Extending his psychic senses, he confirmed that there weren't any char marks from the recent pyroportation. It would be hard to explain why a random fire had occurred overnight. And just as embarrassing if Janus had to explain who made them.
His senses told him all of the scrolls, most of the holodiscs and all of the artifacts were-
Wait! One of them was missing. His mind rested on the empty case where a certain crown should have been.
He hadn't checked out the crown. No one in their right mind would want the Crown of G'nesha.
This left on possibility, since he hadn't checked it out. Someone had stolen library property!
But that was impossible! It was just here five minutes ago.
Wasn't it? Had someone snuck in while he was with Mellie. Or---
No!
She wouldn't have stolen the Crown. She could have just asked for it. Sure, he would have tried to deter her from wanting it. Maybe he'd even try to have her rent a different item that served a similar, yet safer purpose than it.
By the light, who puts such a dangerous thing in a library! Even a cautionary tale like that belonged in safer hands. Not in those of a nineteen year old dual mage!
It was upon his worrying, and circling around the empty case that a familiar presence entered his mind. It was like a cloud that crackled with violet lightning had skimmed across the roof of his skull, grazing the inside of his brain. He'd felt this many times.
