"It's good to see you as well, Gem." Janus didn't bother to bow, or show any form of respect to Princess Gemini. She didn't mind.
"That's the first time I've seen someone cock-blocked by a phoenix." Gemini teased further. "I thought they had gone extinct."
He paid no attention to her insult. "Please tell me you don't have the crown tucked under your breastplate." he stood with his back to her, his thoughts on the empty glass case.
Aside from his thoughts, the empty case was ominous. Only a pillow with a large ring shaped indent was on display. The gold pillow and carpet material inside matched the other displays. Except those weren't empty. And Janus wasn't fretting over them.
"No, idiot. Why would I hide that in my-?"" She paused, realizing what he was implying. The Crown of G'nesha wasn't just missing. It had been stolen.
Judging by what she could gather from Janus' thoughts, he hadn't given the item out. Nor would he have wanted to. After diving into his memories to find holes in his memories, she found none.
So he wasn't mind controlled into giving it away. That only means it had been stolen from under his nose. And the only person who could have done it was Melissa.
"Listen, it couldn't have been her! Melissa wouldn't have-"
With a cutting motion of her hands, she silenced Janus. She needed to think.
Light, why was she doing all the thinking? It was his library. Well, it was the Empire's library, actually, but it was his duty to keep the inventory safe. And if someone had stolen something from under his nose...
Gemini had to do something to protect him. She knew he wasn't guilty of anything besides negligence. And even that wasn't his fault. Gemini had the idea that Melissa had used some advanced magecraft to steal the item.
But what could Gemini do? If she told anyone about this, they'd tell the Imperial Congressman. And those old crones were anything but merciful. They probably wouldn't even order an investigation!
There was only one thing she could do. One thing she knew would ensure his safety. He'd have to stay close to her throughout the next few days, but that wouldn't be a problem.
"Listen, Gem, help me out here. If the Congress finds out about this I'm..." his since filled the room as fear burned from him now.
"Alright, alright, cousin. Just relax. Here's the plan:" She didn't even relay the plan to him. Darkness she barely just made one.
Reaching out with her senses, she made her mind fill Janus' skull, overtaking his body. He had little power to fight back since his own psychic skills were trained around clairvoyance. She filled his mind with her own, splitting her consciousness between their bodies.
A nearly invisible strand of violet energy sprung from her head to his, her thoughts becoming his and vice versa. His body became her second body, but not likewise.
This was a spell she used to swindle the squires in combat. By filling her consciousness into another person's body, she could control them completely. The only cost was that this spell required so much aura, which was hard enough for Aquarius to gather.
"Listen, I'm leaving a bit of you in there, so listen up. Until this is all solved, you're under my entwined consciousness spell. It allows me to take control of another person's body for as long as I draw on the aura." Checking her gauntlets, the charge on them told her she had two days left.
Which means we have to solve this investigation fast. Light knows how long it'll take the old bastards to realize an item was missing!
Janus swayed in place, his eyes glazed over and dyed a light lavender that illuminated the veins there.
"C'mon," she told him. "Let's go get Aquarius' advice on what to do next. She'll know what to do."
