Chapter 3

Kookie pedaled home that evening, the cool breeze of the night brushing against her cheeks as she rode her cycle, feeling lighter than she had in weeks. The day had been long, but it was finally over. She could hear the faint chirping of the crickets as she turned onto her street. The sun was just dipping below the horizon, and the glow from the street lamps painted the world in a soft golden hue. Kookie felt a warmth in her chest as she approached her house, her heart fluttering in excitement.

When she stepped through the door, the familiar scent of her mom's cooking filled the air, instantly making her feel at home. Her parents were waiting at the door, their smiles wide and welcoming. Her mom was already setting the table with her favorite comfort food-a steaming plate of rice, curry, and fried chicken.

"You're home!" her mom said with a bright smile. "I made your favorite, sweetheart."

Kookie beamed, her eyes sparkling as she took in the warm atmosphere. It had been a long time since she felt this comfortable, this loved. She let her backpack slip off her shoulders, the weight of the day evaporating as she sat down to eat. Her dad, always the quiet one, handed her a small, neatly wrapped box.

"What's this?" Kookie asked, her eyebrows raised in curiosity.

Her parents exchanged a smile, and her mom replied, "It's a little something for you. We've noticed how hard you've been working, and we wanted to reward you."

Kookie's hands trembled slightly as she unwrapped the box. Inside was a brand-new phone-something she had never even dared to dream of owning.

Her heart skipped a beat as she held it in her hands, the shiny device almost too good to be true. She looked up at her parents, who were both beaming with pride.

"Thank you, thank you!" Kookie exclaimed, her voice thick with emotion

"Thank you, thank you!" Kookie exclaimed, her voice thick with emotion. "I didn't even know I wanted this, but now I can't imagine life without it!"

Her parents laughed softly, exchanging a glance as they watched their daughter's joy. The night was filled with the sounds of laughter, clinking utensils, and the warmth of family. As Kookie savored her meal, she felt her heart swell with gratitude. It was a simple evening, but one that filled her with an immense sense of peace and happiness.

After dinner, she eagerly set to work decorating her new phone. She carefully applied tiny star-shaped stickers to the back, along with some sparkly hearts.
