I was awoken by soft footsteps on the wooden floor. When I tiredly pried my eyes open I saw Ronan's backside as he finished slipping on his pants. Great way to start the morning.
I still couldn't believe that I had slept in his room ... in his bed.Somehow during the course of the night I had untangled myself from the blanket that was now laying towards the end of the bed, too far away to simply grab it although I was cold without his presence.
The worst: I was laying right on his side of the bed, my limbs covering more than half of the mattress. Embarrassed I pressed my face into the fabric, wishing I was still sleeping to avoid the awkwardness.
Had I slept like this all night? I didn't even know how he had fit into the bed with me like this.
So I pretended to still be asleep, evening out my breath while waiting for him to leave.
I heard him grab something made of metal, probably his blades, before his light footed footsteps came closer.A strand of my hair was pushed behind my ear by a rough yet warm hand. I was barely able to suppress a smile at the sensation.
"I promise I'll tell you everything as soon as I can. There are just some things that need to be done first" he whispered before pressing a soft kiss onto my forehead.
This time I couldn't keep my face neutral but I hoped that he missed the slight tilt of my lips. His words were said reassuringly and whenever he promised something I knew that he would keep that promise.
I listened to his footsteps as he left the room, only allowing myself to move when I heard the door shutting.
Had he known that I was awake?
"Miss Beaufort" I was stopped by none other than Lady Thatcher. She was standing in the doorway to her office, looking annoyed as ever.
Luckily I had already changed my clothes in my dorm room or else this conversation would've gone a lot different, I imagined."In my office" she ordered.
Nervously I stepped through the door into the lion's den. It appeared and felt as cold as ever, the walls were still made of bare stone and there was barely any decoration. This time I didn't bother with sitting on the interrogation chair, instead I stayed closer to the door.
"Tomorrow new guests will arrive on your floor. Rooms 15 F, G and I will have to be cleaned before that. Understood?" she asked as if I was stupid. And maybe she was right because I actually had trouble remembering the letters.
"Understood" I replied, unwilling to ask her to repeat the letters.
"Then you're dismissed" she told me, not even looking up from her desk anymore.
