The first time Bucky saw April was when he came off the elevator at the compound and found her on her knees, trying to pick up a pile of scattered envelopes. Kneeling down wordlessly to help, he startled her with his sudden presence, smiling kindly at her.

"I'm so sorry. The folder just slipped out of my hand, and everything scattered. I'm already late for a meeting and it's all over the place. Assistant Director Hill is going to be furious with me."

"She shouldn't be," said Bucky. "You're her new administrative assistant, aren't you?" April nodded. "Why don't you let me pick the envelopes up and you make sure they're all accounted for?"

With another nod, she started putting the envelopes into alphabetical order, according to the agent named on the front, while Bucky picked up the envelopes that were furthest away, glancing at the mission code and smiling as he realized he was supposed to be at that meeting, which wouldn't start until he got there so he took his time. Several long minutes later, the young woman stood and looked up at the big man.

"Thank you, Sergeant," she murmured. "I owe you."

"Since you know my name, it's only fair you tell me yours," he said.

"April Raines," she replied, wincing slightly. "My parents thought it would be cute."

He smiled, which flustered her a little. "It is cute. Suits you. Come on, we'll walk into the meeting together. Can't get mad at you if I'm late, too."

Unfortunately for April someone did say something. Agent Devins scowled at them both.

"Finally," he groused. "I've got better things to do than wait on a file clerk to be late to an important meeting."

Bucky and Maria both glared at him. What was his problem?

"I bumped into Ms. Raines and knocked the folder out of her hand," replied Bucky sternly. "She's late because of me. You want to try chewing me out, Devins? Or do you just prefer bullying support staff? By the way, Ms. Raines is an administrative assistant not a file clerk."

The man frowned, looking for support from the others but not finding it. Maria was still giving him a death stare.

"My apologies," he said, obviously not meaning it at all. "I should have assumed there was a good reason."

"You should have assumed that the meeting wouldn't start until the mission leader got here," stated Bucky, firmly. "That means me. Ms. Raines, do you accept Agent Devins apology?"

She looked down at her hands and nodded. Bucky smiled at her, then gestured to Maria to begin the briefing. As she described the mission, April distributed the envelopes to the specific agents as they would be responsible for different tasks. Devins scoffed when he got his, making Maria stop talking and glare at him.
