Karthik's first love was a bond that had grown over three years, during his time in MBBS.
Her name was Anshu, and she was the kind of person who made him feel understood and at peace in a world that often felt too demanding.
Their relationship was intense, yet not all-consuming—perfect for Karthik, who had always been focused on his academics and career. They met in the early years of college, and from the start, there was a magnetic connection. Their love grew slowly but steadily, built on mutual respect and shared dreams for the future.

Anshu was caring, intelligent, and supportive. She understood the pressures Karthik faced as a medical student and, later, as a resident.
She had her own ambitions, her own goals, and Karthik admired her for her strength. They spent their days studying together, talking about their future, and sharing small, beautiful moments—quiet walks around campus, late-night phone calls, and weekends spent exploring new places.

Their relationship was full of warmth and affection, a love that felt deep but not overpowering, a relationship that felt like it was meant to last.

As Karthik entered his residency, and Anshu pursued her own career goals, their relationship transitioned into long-distance. It was difficult, but they both committed to making it work.

Karthik found himself distracted by the pressures of his new environment, while Anshu navigated her own challenges, yet they kept in touch, and their bond remained strong.

But despite their commitment, there was one obstacle neither of them had anticipated: Karthik's family. He had always respected his parents, and when the time came for him to talk to them about Anshu, he was hopeful.

But when he mentioned her name, their reaction was anything but what he expected. His parents, who were deeply rooted in tradition, immediately rejected the idea of Karthik marrying outside their caste. They were clear—no matter how much they liked Anshu, caste mattered more.

Karthik was shaken. He had always assumed his parents would be reasonable, especially since he believed his relationship with Anshu was built on the right foundations. But caste was a non-negotiable issue for them. Despite his protests, despite all his attempts to make them understand that love was more important than caste, Karthik's parents remained firm in their stance.

In his family's eyes, the same situation had played out with his elder sister's marriage.
She had fallen in love with someone from her caste, and while they had faced their own struggles, Karthik's parents had accepted the match.
They had insisted that this was the only path to a "good marriage," a belief that had been deeply ingrained in them. Karthik had seen firsthand how love could overcome such obstacles when the marriage fit within the family's ideals.

Despite his heartbreak, Karthik tried again and again. He spoke with his parents, made compromises, tried to bridge the gap between his love for Anshu and their rigid views. But it was clear that their opposition wouldn't change.

Anshu, patient and understanding, waited for months, hoping that Karthik's family would come around.
She believed in their love and was willing to wait.
But time passed, and the pressure of the situation began to weigh on her.
Finally, after months of waiting and after enduring the unrelenting tension, Anshu made the painful decision to move on.
She married someone else—someone from the same caste, someone who fit the mold Karthik's parents had always envisioned for him.

Karthik was crushed. He couldn't bring himself to hold onto the relationship, knowing that Anshu had her own life to live, and that waiting indefinitely wasn't fair to either of them. He let her go.
The pain of losing her, the rejection of his family, and the shattered dreams they had once shared led him to a dark place. He sought solace in alcohol, allowing it to numb the pain and fill the emptiness he felt.

But even in his darkest moments, Karthik never lost his core strength. He pulled himself out of the haze of alcohol, slowly but surely.
The process wasn't easy, but he came out of it—better, clearer, and stronger.
The emotional scars from his first love remained, but he had learned from the experience. Karthik began to look at life differently.
The idea of love, of marriage, no longer held the same appeal for him. The pain of losing Anshu and the pressure from his family had soured his perception of both. He no longer believed in the idealized version of love that he once had, nor did he have the same desire for marriage.

For Karthik, the idea of love and marriage became something distant—something that was perhaps better left untouched. He focused solely on his residency, on his work, and on moving forward.
He realized that if he were to marry, it would likely be someone his family chose, someone who fit the mold they had set for him. For his parents, he would follow the path they wanted, even if that meant giving up on love as he had once known it.

Now, as he continued his life, he carried the lessons of his first love with him—memories of Anshu, of their bond, and of how family and tradition had shaped his choices. And while his heart had closed off to love for a time, he knew that life would continue to challenge him in unexpected ways, perhaps even forcing him to question everything he once believed.
