The air was cold, biting at Kara's skin as she leaned against her car, her gaze fixed on the endless, shadowed forest ahead. She could hear the quiet sounds of night settling over the small town of Forks, Washington, an unassuming backdrop to the strange, tangled path her life had taken. She tugged her jacket tighter around her shoulders and glanced at the moon, only partially visible through thick clouds.

When Kara moved to Forks with her adoptive family, the Danvers, she'd expected quiet anonymity in this rainy corner of the world. High school should have been simple: make friends, keep her head down, keep her powers in check. But her world was anything but simple.

Kara's life changed the moment she noticed Lena Luthor, the dark-haired girl who seemed to carry an entire world of secrets with her. There was something magnetic about Lena, something that called out to Kara on a level she couldn't ignore. Lena was enigmatic, with a gaze that lingered just a little too long, as if seeing straight through the layers Kara had spent her life carefully constructing.

The first time they crossed paths, it was in the cafeteria, where Lena sat alone at a table in the far corner, untouched by anyone around her. Most students kept their distance, but Kara had felt an immediate pull, as if she were somehow connected to Lena's presence. Rumors swirled around Lena and her family. They weren't just mysterious—they were the center of endless whispers and myths, the kind that didn't make sense in the modern world.

A voice broke Kara's reverie. "Kara." Alex, her adoptive sister, appeared beside her, folding her arms. "We should get going. You've got early classes tomorrow."

"Right," Kara murmured, pushing herself off the car. But her thoughts lingered on Lena. Alex had warned her to stay away, saying the Luthors were trouble. And Kara knew, on some level, that getting involved with Lena would lead her down a dangerous path. Yet, each time she tried to push Lena from her mind, the pull only grew stronger.

The next morning, Forks High School buzzed with the usual chatter. Kara tried to blend into the background, keeping to herself in class, but she knew it was a losing battle when she caught sight of Lena entering the room. Lena's presence had a way of silencing the chatter, as if the entire world took a collective breath around her.

Lena's gaze flicked toward her, a barely perceptible shift that sent a thrill down Kara's spine. Her face was expressionless, but her eyes held a faint hint of curiosity, and maybe—Kara hoped—a spark of recognition. Lena's dark hair fell over her shoulder as she sat at her desk, and Kara couldn't shake the feeling that she was being drawn into something she didn't fully understand.

When the bell rang, Kara gathered her books and hurried out, trying to get some air, when a soft voice stopped her.

"Kara."

She turned. Lena stood there, her eyes thoughtful, measuring. Up close, she was even more striking, her features sharp yet elegant, her expression unreadable.

"Hi," Kara managed, caught off guard by the intensity of Lena's gaze.

"I've noticed you... watching," Lena said quietly, a flicker of amusement in her tone. "Do you make a habit of staring at people?"

Kara felt heat rise to her cheeks. "I... no, I mean, I wasn't—" She fumbled for words. "I just thought... I mean, I wanted to say hi."

Lena's lips curved into a small smile, one that didn't reach her eyes. "Well, you've said it."

Kara felt her cheeks redden. She wasn't used to being disarmed like this, especially not by someone who seemed so guarded, so remote. But there was something else there too—an energy between them that made the hair on Kara's arms stand on end.

"You don't belong here," Lena said softly, almost to herself. "Not in this place, not with these people." There was a note of bitterness in her voice, something that sounded almost... sad.

Kara swallowed, her instincts kicking in. She could sense the pain behind Lena's words, a pain that mirrored her own struggle to fit into a world that wasn't her own.

"What makes you say that?" Kara asked, her voice steadier than she felt.

Lena hesitated, her eyes flicking to the forest beyond the school parking lot. "It's just a feeling," she murmured, her gaze drifting back to Kara. "Something... different."

Kara felt a shiver run through her. Lena's words were unsettling, but they struck a chord deep within her. Different. Yes, that was a word she knew all too well. She could sense there was something about Lena that set her apart from the world around her—something not entirely human.

"You know, different doesn't always have to be a bad thing," Kara said softly. "Sometimes, it's what makes us... special."

Lena's expression flickered, a rare crack in her controlled facade. For a moment, Kara thought she saw a hint of vulnerability in Lena's eyes, a glimpse into the guarded soul hidden beneath.

But the moment was gone as quickly as it had come. Lena's face hardened, and she took a step back, putting distance between them. "Be careful, Kara," she warned, her voice cold. "Curiosity can be dangerous. Especially with people like me."

Before Kara could respond, Lena turned and disappeared into the shadows of the school hallway, leaving Kara standing alone, her heart pounding. As the echoes of Lena's warning faded, Kara felt a new sense of determination settle within her. She didn't know what secrets Lena held or why she seemed to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders.

But one thing was certain: Kara wasn't going to walk away.
