RECAP: After finding out his curse was false, Will told Tessa he loved her. She didn't believe him, which led to Will telling her the entire story of why he had pushed everyone he loved away.
Tessa eventually told him about her engagement to Jem, and Will ends up leaving the room, slamming the door. Tessa intentionally burns herself with a fireplace poker, to make herself cry. Sophie tends to the burn.
END RECAP
After Sophie left Tessa to rest, she got up, tiptoeing across the hall. She heard someone in their room, their breath hitching in short gasps. After a moment, she realized that it was Will. Her already broken heart shattered even more. She crept closer, looking through the crack in the door. She saw Will sitting on his bed, blue eyes watery. His cheeks were red, and his breathing uneven, looking utterly shattered.
She heard him muttering over and over again, "She loves Jem, not you. Not you. Never you." A sob wracked his body, tears streaming down his face. He tried to take a deep breath to stop his tears, but failed miserably, his breath hitching.
Tessa stood at the door, unaware of the tears now trickling down her own face, her hand over her mouth.
He fell back on his bed, hands shaking, body trembling. He ran a hand over his face, tears still streaming from his eyes. Tessa couldn't watch anymore, running silently back to her room.
WILL POV
(right after he leaves the drawing room, before going to Jem's room)
I sat down on my bed, unable to stop the tears. Pull yourself together, Will, I thought to myself. She loves Jem. She loves Jem. She loves Jem. I couldn't seem to wrap my head around the idea that my parabatai was in love with Tessa, and she with him. There was no way he loves her like I do. No one could. "She loves Jem. Not you. Not you. Never you. " I said aloud, to no one in particular.
I remembered my mother telling me: If you take a deep breath, you'll stop crying. But only if you have enough control, Gwilym. I tried, but my breathing hitched, and there was nothing I could do to stop the tears. I fell back on my bed, and put my face in my hands.
In half an hour, I will go to Jem's room. What are you going to do there? Try to talk him out of marrying Tessa? Try to convince yourself that he doesn't love her? Who couldn't love someone like Tessa?
