In the hallway, Innae went through all the supplies we needed to clean and inspect the rooms.
"Your housekeeping cart must be well-stocked: toilet paper rolls, soaps, white towels of different sizes. Remember disinfecting wipes and cleaning products."
She added a few more recommendations before handing it over to Hoshi.
"Call us on your walkie-talkie as soon as the suite is ready, so we can inspect it. Be efficient!"
"Any questions?"
We shook our heads, ready to start.
"Good!" Innae said. "Always stick with your Bonnie and Clyde."
Her gaze settled on me. A strange expression crossed her face. She opened her mouth, seeming to search for her words.
"Bora, we need to talk during your break."
She raised her eyebrows and nodded, asking if I understood. A wave of heat spread across my face. I bowed and nodded affirmatively. Clearly, she too knew about my "fake" relationship with Eliel. I groaned internally.
Suite after suite, my Clyde and I poured all our energy into our work. We cleaned bathrooms, wiped windows, changed sheets and pillows. My movements were still clumsy as I tried to make the bed edges neat. Every wrinkle made me grumble. Alan, more experienced, helped me patiently, offering advice. Finally, we inspected every square inch with the stain remover spray. We couldn't forget to arrange the flowers and gifts for the client before leaving.
I tried my best to stay focused and concentrate on the tasks at hand, but the memories of last night haunted me every minute. Every time I closed my eyes, Eliel's face flashed before me—his shy smile, his awkward gestures. I still couldn't believe what had happened was real.
Hoshi, our team leader, entered the room while we were gathering sheets and towels into a bag. He walked over to check our work, inspecting every corner, then leaned over the bed to examine the folds in the freshly made linens.
"Good! Your carts are full. Take them to the laundry now and restock while you're there."
Alan helped me load my heavy bag onto my cart. We'd only been cleaning suites for three hours, yet the exhaustion was setting in. My arms hurt, my neck ached. This job was really physically demanding. I should start having a proper breakfast if I want to make it through the morning.
After pushing the carts into the elevator, I leaned my back against the cabin wall.
"I'm hot," I complained, closing my eyes for a moment.
As we descended into the depths of the palace, I heard Alan's labored breathing.
"We need to hurry," he panted. "The next suite has to be ready in an hour!"
"Is it always like this?"
"Yes. The worst are wedding days. Weekends are terrible!"
I grimaced at the thought of working those days. The doors opened, and we hurried into the maze of corridors. Destination: the laundry room.
