The sun began its ascent over the horizon on a crisp September morning in 2022, casting a gentle warmth across Cape Town. The vibrant neighborhood of Camps Bay buzzed with life, the salty tang of the ocean mingling with the aroma of fresh coffee wafting from the nearby café. Candice stood at the open balcony of their cozy rented apartment, the sunlight dancing on her brown skin as she watered the potted succulents.

"Mzi! Come look! The sun is perfect this morning!" she called, her voice bright and inviting, her hazel eyes sparkling with excitement.

Mzi, seated at the small dining table with his laptop open, looked up. His deep brown eyes held a hint of irritation, but he masked it with a smile. "Just a minute, Candice. I need to finish this assignment for class."

Candice turned back to her plants, a small frown crossing her face. She wanted to share the moment with him, but she knew Mzi often buried himself in work. As she trimmed the leaves of a particularly stubborn succulent, she could hear the clacking of keys behind her.

"You know, you could take a break," she suggested, trying to keep her tone light. "Just fifteen minutes?"

Mzi sighed, rubbing a hand through his short curls. "I'll join you after this. I promise."

The promise felt heavy in the air, a silent acknowledgment of the distance growing between them. Candice returned to her plants, but her thoughts drifted to the last few weeks. Mzi's mood had shifted, shadows lurking behind his usually warm smile. She couldn't shake the feeling that their relationship was teetering on the edge of something precarious.

The afternoon rolled in with a simmering tension. Candice had invited friends over for a small gathering to celebrate the end of exams. She flitted around the apartment, arranging snacks and setting up music, her laughter mingling with the upbeat tempo of a local artist.

When their friends arrived, the atmosphere shifted, laughter bubbling through the air like champagne. Mzi remained in the corner, nursing a drink, his eyes scanning the room as if searching for a way to escape.

"Come on, Mzi! Join us!" one of their friends, Maro, shouted, pulling him into a circle of dancing bodies.

"I'm good here," Mzi replied, his voice low, but Candice caught the edge of frustration beneath it.

"Don't be a party pooper!" Candice chimed, her playful tone masking her concern. She danced over to him, her curvy figure moving effortlessly with the rhythm. "Just one dance?"

Reluctantly, he stood, his tall frame towering over her as she pulled him into the throng of friends. The music pulsed around them, and for a moment, the weight on Mzi's shoulders seemed to lift. But as Candice twirled, her laughter echoing, she caught a glimpse of his distant expression.

Later, as the night wound down, Candice found Mzi sitting on the balcony, staring out at the ocean, the moonlight casting soft shadows on his face. She joined him, the chill of the night air wrapping around them.

"Hey," she whispered, nudging him gently. "You okay?"

"I'm fine," he replied, his tone clipped.

Candice bit her lip, feeling the familiar sting of frustration. "You're not fine. You haven't been fine for weeks, Mzi. What's going on?"

He turned to her, his dark eyes flashing. "I'm just tired, Candice. Tired of everything."

"Everything?" she echoed, her heart racing. "What do you mean?"

Mzi sighed, running a hand over his face. "I mean... school, work, my family. It's all a lot, and I'm just trying to hold everything together."

Candice felt a pang of sympathy but also irritation. "You don't have to do it alone, you know? I'm here. Let me help."
