Sorry it's a way shorter chapter than usual- and a drabble- and there may be a cliffhanger- but I had a lot of writer's block when trying to write this chapter and I just needed it done. This is more of an in-between chapter so chapter nine is going to be fun, I'll try and get that to you as soon as I can.
Annabeth had to be the best.
There was no other option, not for her.
She had to solve this case, she had to find out who Siren was, she had to help the heroes and police forces capture him.
Athena trusted her with this, trusted that Annabeth was the one who could solve it.
And solve it she would.
She visited every crime scene, every single place he had been spotted.
She followed every lead, looked through every file.
Every person she could wrangle into an interview was interviewed.
.
.
.
It wasn't enough.
Every flooded warehouse, every injury a hero sustained was proof.
Annabeth couldn't do this.
But she had to.
Every time Siren appeared in her windowsill, she asked him to reveal himself, come in for arrest, something. Every time, he tried to change the subject, and she threatened to tell someone he was here. The final nail in her lonely, poorly-built coffin was when she lunged at him, with her knife, intent on taking off his mask. He didn't come back after that.
Not that it mattered, since he was a villain.
Annabeth didn't need company, either, she needed to do this case.
Thalia thought otherwise.
"You need sleep, and some good food." She'd insisted. "Come on, I'll take you out to get some dinner and then I expect you to get some good sleep. M'kay?"
Thalia was annoying like that.
It had been a great night. Warm food, comfy clothes, and the sleep that she hadn't realized she needed. Hanging out with Thalia again had been so...refreshing, that she almost believed, just for that night, that everything would be just fine.
Oh how wrong she was.
