It wasn't long before you reached the edge of the Glade, a place you both used to retreat to when things got too overwhelming. The open space here always calmed you both, but little did you know, tomorrow was the day you guys would escape.

When you were exploring the lost city, you couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong with Newt. It was in the way his eyes seemed to dart around, as if constantly searching for something, and the way his breaths came just a little too quick.
it didn’t take long for you to notice something else unsettling in Newt. You had spent hours traveling through the barren wasteland, your only goal to get to the rumored Safe Haven. But there were moments when Newt would space out, staring off into the distance, his breathing shallow. The glint in his eyes was different, distant.

you both were sitting on top of a building, together, alone..

“Newt?” you asked one evening, as you both rested by a crumbled building. You noticed how his hand subtly moved to his right arm, clutching it tightly as though it pained him. “You okay?” you asked.

“No.. I'm not,” His fingers trembled slightly as he pulled his sleeve up. A dark, angry scratch marred his skin, the infection already beginning to spread.

“Newt… you—”

“I got scratched, [Y/N]. A crank. I didn’t think it was that bad at first, but… now I’m not so sure. Just… don’t tell anyone,” he murmured, his voice low, a hint of fear in his eyes.

You felt your heart drop. There was no mistaking it. The infection was taking hold of him.

The days after that were the hardest. You watched as Newt’s condition worsened. His body weakened. His gaze grew emptier. The vibrant spark in his eyes began to dull, and his once steady hands would tremble uncontrollably. You did everything you could to keep him steady, trying to remain hopeful, but you could see it in him—he was slipping away.
