The next day, Ren called her in the middle of the night, his voice crackling through the phone with excitement. "Ari, wake up! I just had the best idea!"
Ari groaned, squinting at her clock. "Ren, it's two in the morning..."
"Exactly! The perfect time for a spontaneous road trip."
She sat up, half-awake, her heart doing an involuntary flip. "Are you serious?"
"Completely. I'm outside," he said, and she could hear the grin in his voice.
Sure enough, when she peered out her window, there he was, leaning against his car with that same mischievous smile. Before she knew it, she was bundled up in a sweater and slipping into the passenger seat, her hair a mess and her mind still half-asleep.
They drove under the stars, the road stretching out before them like an endless ribbon of possibility. The radio played softly, a mix of old songs and static, and they filled the silence with stories and laughter. He told her about his childhood, the games he'd played and the trouble he'd gotten into, and she shared pieces of her own life, stories she hadn't told anyone else.
"Do you ever think about the future?" she asked, her voice barely louder than a whisper.
"Sometimes," he replied, his tone unusually serious. "But I try not to plan too much. I'd rather live in the moment, you know?"
Ari nodded, but she couldn't shake the strange feeling in her chest. There was something about this night, something that felt both endless and impossibly fleeting, as if she were grasping at smoke.
They parked by a secluded lake, the water dark and still beneath the moonlight. Ren got out first, gesturing for her to follow. She hesitated, feeling a strange mix of excitement and dread, but she followed him anyway, trusting him without question.
They sat by the water's edge, their shoulders brushing, watching as the stars reflected on the lake's surface. The world was silent, as if holding its breath, and in that moment, Ari felt a happiness so sharp it was almost painful.
"Hey," he said, his voice soft. "No sad thoughts tonight. This is a happy night, remember?"
She managed a smile, though her heart ached. She didn't know why, but something told her that this night, this moment, would stay with her forever.
And as the first light of dawn broke over the horizon, casting a warm glow over the lake, Ari realized something that both thrilled and terrified her.
She was in love with him.
