“Maisie, quick he’s here,” Dexter yelled for the third time. There was no response, and he was panicking. Should he go in or wait? If he went in, he would blow their cover. He went and hid in the bushes hoping not to get caught. Dexter closed his eye’s hoping Maisie was going to be ok. She was smart enough to not get caught, hopefully. Inside Maisie continued grabbing things while sipping the rum. She looked out the window to see a black Porsche pulling into the driveway.

Maisie’s widened as she stopped looking in the fridge. She threw her favourite snacks on the counter and ran up the stairs. She made it to the top just as her father was walking in. He slammed the door behind him, stomping into the kitchen. He noticed the snacks on the counter and the fridge door left open. His face turned a shade of putrid red.

“Who’s in my house!” he bellowed, his voice echoing off the walls. Her father’s footsteps crashed the wooden stairs. Maisie shut her bedroom door quietly. She rushed to the window, trying to get Dexter’s attention. Dexter saw her frantic attempts to catch his attention. He scurried below the window.

“Ready to throw the bag?” he yelled. Maisie nodded before chucking the rubbish bag with her possessions to Dexter. He caught it, placing it aside. Maisie could hear doors opening and closing upstairs and was anxious her room was going to be next.

“I know your in here somewhere you, thieving pig!” screeched Maisie’s father, storming around the house.

“Dexter! I need to get down he knows I’m here!” Maisie yelled, desperately. The door flung open.

“MAISIE LOUISE PARKERS! YOUR A HORRID CHILD!” he screamed, making his way to Maisie who was halfway out the window. He grabbed her foot tightly, his nails digging into her pale skin. Maisie screamed in pain. His grip was so tight it felt her blood circulation was cutting off.

“Let go! Please!” she cried, trying to escape from his grasp. Maisie looked into his eyes, raged inflamed in them. This was her father, the man who took her to the playground, made snowmen with her, who read bedtime stories to her. And now, now she didn’t even know him anymore.

“You’re a liar. I loved you, you’re my dad. Now I don’t even recognise you, I feel like I don’t know you. You’ve changed and not in a good way,” Maisie said, her voice brittle. She kicked her foot, hitting her father in the head. He let go in shock.

“CATCH ME!” screamed Maisie at Dexter below. She jumped; her eyes shut. She landed in the safe comfort of Dexter. Her father looked below, screaming at her and Dexter. Maisie’s ankle was throbbing and had already turned a deep shade of purple. Dexter picked up the bag and grabbed Maisie’s hand, leading her to the car, Maisie’s father storming out the house. Dexter and Maisie started running to the car jumping in as quick as possible.

Maisie’s father chased their jeep as it drove down the road. Maisie hung her hand out the window, sticking the middle finger up at him as he run. They turned the corner, losing sight of him. Dexter smiled happily and patted Maisie’s shoulder.

“Good job partner. We did it. A few bumps along the way but its ok,” Dexter laughed, except Maisie didn’t laugh. She was breathing fast and sharp, her chest rising and falling. She reached into the bag pulling out a bottle of rum. She took a sip, letting the rum burn the back of her throat.

“You know it’s not going to help with the pain,” stated Dexter. Maisie shrugged and took another large sip. Dexter grabbed the bottle, pulling it away from her.

“Hey! What are you doing!” yelled Maisie angrily. Dexter shook his head, looking into Maisie’s blank eyes.

“You’re not doing any favours for yourself,” explained Dexter, keeping his eyes on the road.

“What would you know! You’re not going through anything like this, or ever had! I don’t see your mum dying, the only person you love. I don’t see your dad abusing you. You are living life perfectly normally. I don’t have anyone anymore, no one,” Maisie cried, her voice brittle. Tear rolled down her cheeks. Dexter felt tears in his own eyes. Seeing Maisie like this stabbed a hole in his heart.

“You have me.”
