"I'm sorry but what the fuck man? My friend here was being polite! What is your problem, this is your job and its Christmas! If this is how you're going to treat your clients I ought to put in a complaint," yelled Dexter, defending Maisie. Wilby turned around and walked back over to Dexter and Maisie.
"Sorry, that was quite rude. From what I know your not like your father. I'm not going to go into it all, but your father and I aren't on the best of terms. I'm sorry Maisie Parkers," said Wilby. Maisie's mouth curved into a small smile, yet she was curious.
"Thank you, Wilby, I accept your apology. Now shall we cart this tree back to the car," suggested Maisie. Wilby nodded as he went to collect a cart to haul the tree back.
"Thanks for sticking up for me then," said Maisie to Dexter.
"Anytime," he replied, as Maisie gave him a hug. Dexter didn't want to let go. He held onto her for a bit longer before Wilby came back.
"There you go, now treat my Tessie with respect. She's my best tree," Wilby said a bit tearfully.
"We will. Thank you so much have a good Christmas," said Dexter, shaking hands with Wilby, and started to pull the cart.
"You to lovebirds have a good Christmas," yelled Wilby as they walked off. Maisie spun around and yelled,
"We're just friends!"
"You could have fooled me!" replied Wilby. Maisie rolled her eyes and continued walking. Dexter on the other hand didn't mind being mistaken as a couple. He liked it. They walked past the hot chocolate stand, the scent of the warm chocolate liquid filled Maisie's lungs.
"Dexter, you take the tree to the car. I've just got to quickly do something," yelled Maisie over the chatters of families and the happy squeals of kids. Dexter nodded as Maisie wondered off to the hot chocolate stand. She waited in line until it was her turn.
"Hello, can I please order two large hot chocolates?" Maisie asked the young worker.
"Of course, that will be ten dollars, and your order number is 100. You're our one hundredth order for the night meaning you get a free bag of cinnamon donut from the stand directly across us," cheered the worker. She handed Maisie her receipt and a ticket to get her donuts. Maisie rushed to the donut stand where the line was short. Soon enough it was her turn.
"I won a free bag of donuts from the hot chocolate stand, am I able to redeem my ticket?" Maisie asked, handing her ticket to a middle-aged man who was working as the cashier.
"Yes, congrats on being the winner," he said as he handed Maisie a warm, fresh bag of cinnamon donuts. Maisie smiled before walking back to the hot chocolate stand where here hot chocolates were waiting. She grabbed them before wishing the worker a merry Christmas. Maisie made her way to the carpark, spotting Dexter waiting in the jeep. She rushed up to his open car window.
"I got us a hot chocolate and I won a free bag of donuts!" Maisie boasted handing Dexter the drinks and donuts so she could get in. Dexter smiled broadly.
"Well done and thanks for the hot chocolate," Dexter said sweetly. Maisie turned on the radio and turned it up loudly. It was Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears. Dexter sang along loudly. To Maisie's surprise he was a pretty good singer. Maisie sang along too, and Dexter rolled down the windows. Maisie couldn't stop laughing at the looks they were getting from people.
They drove down her father's street, he was sitting outside smoking a cigarette and he stared at them as they drove past, not realising it was his own daughter. The moon hung like an orb in the sky, dimly lighting up the sky. The old lights flickered on Dexter's street, as the snow fell heavier. The white jeep pulled into the driveway of Dexter's cottage. He got out and started lugging the tree into the house as Maisie took the half drank hot chocolates and what few donuts were left into the house. She unlocked the door and opened it as wide as it goes so Dexter could get the tree inside.
He placed it in the corner of the living room. Maisie went to the Chill Room (The spare room) and fetched some things to decorate the tree with. She placed the small box of supplies on the couch. She grabbed some silver tinsel and wrapped it around the tree, along with some silken red ribbon. Dexter put some gold baubles spread sporadically on the tree. Maisie stood back and admired the tree.
"It's missing something," she said before rummaging through the box, pulling out a golden star. She tried placing it on top of the tree, but the tree was way to tall. Maisie pouted sadly. Dexter crept up behind her and clutched her waist lifting her onto his shoulders with ease. Maisie squealed as she was not prepared.
"You should be tall enough now," he said. Maisie laughed and she placed the star on top of Tessie the Tree. Maisie giggled and gazed at the tree. Then she looked below at Dexter's face. He was grinning widely.
"I like being this tall," she giggled.
"Yeah, well carting you around isn't going to be my new full time job doll," Dexter joked, acting all posh and he put Maisie down, her blonde hair whipping his face.
"It looks lovely. Wilby would love to see Tessie all dressed up," Dexter said. Maisie nodded before yawning. She looked at the large clock that hung on the wall. Twelve o' clock in the morning.
"It's time for me to go to bed, unless you want cyclone Maisie tomorrow," joked Maisie. Dexter chuckled and said goodnight before going to bed himself.
