“Oh, you did not just do that!” Maisie chuckled as she submerges her fingers in the batter, coating them. She swiftly moves her hand across Dexters eyebrows and nose. Dexter giggled intensely like a two-year-old, causing Maisie to smile brightly. Dexter scooped up a pile of the batter and flicked it over Maisie’s face and fawn hoodie. Maisie shrieked as the batter dripped down her face and onto her favourite hoodie. Her angelic eyes were piercing as they investigated to Dexters chocolate ones.
“To far, Dexter,” muttered Maisie before running off.
“Wait? What?” yelled Dexter. He went to chase after her but thought to leave her some space. Dexter scooped what was left of the batter into a pan and placed it into the oven. He opened the fridge, the cold radiating onto his skin. He reached and grabbed a punnet of fresh strawberries. He cut them up and placed them into an antique bowl that his grandmother had given him.
He sat down on the stool, replaying Maisie and his recent interaction. She seemed fine, and a little bit of brownie batter on her hoodie was no big deal, right? She had overreacted in Dexter’s opinion, yet again, he forgot how fragile she could be, especially at a time like this. He sighed heavily and buried his head in his hands. Why did he care so much anyway? It’s not like she’s done anything worse. Oh wait, she broke his heart and rumoured to have cheated on him.
Dexter shook his head. Maybe he was just overthinking. She overreacted while they were just having fun. After many thoughts, the smell of baked brownies settled into the kitchen. Dexter got up and removed them from the oven, allowing them to cool. The sound of footsteps could be heard above him, and he immediately knew where she was. She was on the roof, ready to watch the sunset. Dexter grabbed the bowl of strawberries and tray of brownies, before heading up to the roof.
Just as he thought, Maisie was sitting alone on the roof, her feet dangling off the edge, above the tiny balcony. She was cradling the hoodie; her mascara ran down her face. I sat next to her, placing the food between us. She was looking at the tag on the hoodie. Written in perfect cursive was a small note.
Dear my beautiful Scarlett,
I’m sorry about our recent argument, of course I’m happy about the baby, we’re going to be parents!
This hoodie is to keep you and the baby warm and safe, also so you don’t keep stealing mine!
Love, Daniel.
Dexter sighed. It was more than a hoodie; it was proof that her father had loved her mother.
“Maisie, I’m so sorry. I was trying to have fun but took it too far. I promise I’ll get all the stains out,” Dexter explained quietly. Maisie looked up; her eyes shimmered like pearls.
“You promise? Pinky promise?” asked Maisie, holding her finger up. Dexter chuckled and intertwined his Pinky finger with hers.
“Trust me I’m an artist who bakes a lot. I think I know how to get stains out of clothes,” he laughed. Maisie laughed quietly. The usual deer family bathed in the setting sun. Maisie ate a piece of brownie and her eyes lit up, going in for another one and some strawberries.
The sky looked like swirls of warm coloured paint, as the ball of 1000s of glowing embers descended. Radiant rays beamed into the sky one last time for the day. The vermillion colours glowed on Maisie’s face. She looked stunning. Hues of nectar, crimson and amber spread across the sky. It was one of the prettiest sunsets Maisie had seen, and she was watching it on Dexters roof.
As if the sky were a faucet, slowly draining the vibrant colours into a vacuum of nothingness. It turned a deep shade of blue and looked like a pot of glitter and been tipped into it. The stars and moon were now watching over the world. The moonlight illuminated Dexter and Maisie, enjoying this moment of beauty.
“That was magic.”
