Zee couldn't believe it. She was about to go on a date with Migs. After years of crushing on him, she had finally agreed to spend time with him outside of school. The idea made her feel a mix of excitement and anxiety, but the one thing that kept her grounded was the knowledge that she had to keep her emotions under control. No matter what happened, she couldn’t afford to lose control of her powers.
“Zee, it’s okay,” Aria said with a reassuring smile. “Just keep your cool. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you. You can do this.”
Kalli, who had been quieter than usual, gave her a thumbs-up. “Yeah, just don’t blow anything up, okay?”
Zee shot her a playful glare. “I’m trying, okay? I’m not planning to burn down the entire place.”
“Good,” Kalli said with a wink. “We trust you.”
River nodded, her expression serious. “Just remember, emotions are the key. Stay calm, and everything will be fine.”
“I know,” Zee replied, her voice low as she adjusted her bag nervously. “I just don’t know if I’m ready for this.”
“You’re ready,” Niamh said, her usual calm demeanor a little more playful now. “You’ve been crushing on him for years. This is your chance.”
Zee gave a small smile, but the nerves were still there. “I just don’t want to mess it up. What if my powers act up?”
“That’s why we’re here,” River said. “We’ll follow you and keep an eye out, just in case. You’ll be fine.”
With a deep breath, Zee finally agreed. “Okay. I’ll go. But if anything happens, I’m blaming all of you.”
The girls laughed, and with that, Zee set off to meet Migs at the café just outside their school. The girls followed discreetly, keeping their distance but making sure they were close enough to intervene if needed.
---
As Zee walked into the café, she saw Migs already sitting at a table, his easy smile lighting up his face when he saw her. She felt her heart race, but she quickly pushed the feeling aside. She had to stay calm. No emotions, no triggers.
“Hey, Zee,” Migs greeted, standing up to pull out the chair for her. “I’m glad you could make it.”
Zee smiled nervously, sitting down. “Yeah, me too. I’ve been looking forward to this.”
They started talking, and for a while, it felt like just another casual hangout. Migs was easy to talk to, and Zee found herself laughing more than she expected. Still, she remained hyper-aware of her emotions, making sure nothing triggered her powers.
But as they talked, Zee's fingers subtly began to tap the surface of her glass, the motion of her hand causing the water inside to ripple slightly. She focused on her breathing, trying to keep herself in check. If she wasn’t careful, her hydrokinesis might get out of control.
Meanwhile, Kalli sat in a corner of the café, her fingers idly playing with the edge of her lighter. She was watching Zee closely, ready to step in if anything went wrong. But she couldn’t help but feel a little on edge. She had pyro powers, and if Zee lost control of her water, Kalli’s flames could easily become a problem. They had to be careful.
---
As they chatted, Zee’s friends lingered outside, watching from a distance. They couldn’t help but feel protective of her, especially after everything that had happened recently. They knew how much this meant to Zee, and they wanted to make sure she could handle it.
But just as things were starting to feel normal, a sudden commotion broke out on the street.
“Look!” Aria said, pointing toward the road.
A little girl, no older than six, had run straight into the busy highway, oblivious to the speeding cars coming her way. The sound of honking horns and screeching tires filled the air as the girls gasped.
Zee’s heart skipped a beat. “We have to do something!” she exclaimed.
Before anyone could react, River stepped forward, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the little girl. Time seemed to slow as she concentrated, and with a flick of her wrist, the cars around the girl froze in place, the screeching halt of tires filling the air.
“River!” Kalli shouted in alarm, but it was too late. The cars were frozen, and the little girl was safely out of harm’s way.
However, the moment River used her powers, she wasn’t careful enough to hide it. Several people on the street had witnessed what happened. Among them was Migs, who had been watching the whole scene unfold.
Zee froze. “Migs...” she whispered, her heart sinking.
Before she could say anything else, Niamh, who had been standing off to the side, panic-stricken, locked eyes with the bystanders who had seen River’s power. She hadn’t meant to, but in her panic, she unintentionally activated her ability.
Her eyes glowed faintly, and in an instant, the memories of everyone who had witnessed the event were erased, wiped clean as if nothing had happened.
The little girl, now completely unaware of the danger she had been in, continued walking with her mother, oblivious to the fact that she had almost been hit by a car. The people around them acted as if they had never seen the incident at all.
But Migs, who had been closest to the scene, blinked in confusion. His mind felt foggy, as if something had been erased from his memory.
Zee felt a wave of guilt wash over her. “Niamh... did you—?”
Niamh lowered her head, guilt written all over her face. “I... I didn’t mean to. I just... panicked.”
“I didn’t see anything,” Migs said, looking around, his brow furrowed. “Did something happen?”
Zee opened her mouth to respond, but before she could speak, she saw the woman again—the one who had been watching them earlier. She was standing at the edge of the crowd, her eyes locked onto them.
Her face was obscured by the shadows, but Zee could feel her gaze on them, cold and calculating. The woman’s lips barely moved as she spoke into her phone, though Zee couldn’t hear the words.
“It’s done,” the woman said, her voice soft but filled with intent. “They’ve revealed themselves. Get ready.”
Zee’s stomach turned, a sense of unease crawling up her spine. Who was she? And what did she mean by "get ready"?
As Migs continued to ask if everything was okay, Zee couldn’t shake the feeling that something bigger was happening—something that went beyond their powers. Something dangerous.
