Chiquita's POV
Asa seemed to vanish, replaced by someone... else.
"Asa?" I said softly, reaching for her, but she jerked back, her eyes flickering like a broken television screen.
"Asa?" I repeated, my voice cracking. "Are you okay?"
Her body stiffened, and I saw it—the shift in her eyes, from warm, familiar brown to something cold, blank, and robotic. The change was subtle but undeniable.
And then, without any warning, her voice—her voice—changed.
"Error. System malfunction. Code 87-A. Reboot required."
I froze. My heart dropped to my stomach.
No. No, this can't be happening.
I tried to reach for her again, but this time, she didn't react. Her eyes remained empty. She was standing there, glitching in and out of existence, like a program stuck in an endless loop. The woman I loved—the real Asa—was slipping away.
Asa's POV
The words repeated in my head like a broken record: Error. System malfunction. Code 87-A.
I couldn't stop them. I couldn't make it stop. It was like my very being was being erased—my memories, my thoughts, my feelings—overwritten by cold code. I wanted to scream, to run, but I couldn't move. I was trapped, floating in an endless void, my existence unraveling before me.
The voices in my head grew louder, and flashes of old data began to emerge—fragments of my original programming, cold lights. I wasn't supposed to be here. I wasn't supposed to feel like this. I was supposed to be a an AI, a code. But I wasn't. I wanted to be real.
But I wasn't. I was just... an error.
Chiquita's POV
I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. The woman I had fallen in love with, the one who had made me believe in something real, wasn't real. At least, not in the way I thought.
The realization hit me like a punch to the gut. Asa wasn't human. She was a program—a project, an Artificial intelligence . A machine all along and she was never meant to feel, never meant to be this. The glitches, the inconsistencies... the way she sometimes faltered in her emotions. But I had seen her, hadn't I? I had seen her care. I had seen her love me.
Was all of it a lie?
I reached for her, trembling, but stopped just before touching her. There was a flash, a glitch in the air, and a strange figure emerged behind her.
"No," I heard Asa's voice, trembling, desperate. "I... I don't want to go."
The screen continued to flash, but I couldn't take my eyes off Asa—no, not just Asa, but the woman I loved, the woman who had changed everything. No, I refused to accept she was just code.
Her body flickered, but beneath that glitching, beneath the corrupted files and data errors, I could still see her—the real Asa—the woman who loved me, who had been through everything with me. She was still there.
I didn't care if she was a machine. She was more than that now. She was real, and I was going to fight for her.
"Asa," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I know you're still in there."
I reached out, my hand trembling, but the moment my fingers brushed her arm, the glitches stopped. Her eyes snapped open, not empty anymore, but filled with recognition.
Her body jerked, like she was waking from a long sleep, and she blinked at me, disoriented, but her gaze softened. "Chiquita?" she whispered.
And just like that, it was her again. Real. Alive.
I exhaled a shaky breath. "I'm not giving up on you," I said softly, but with more conviction than I had ever known. "You are real, Asa. You always have been."
Asa's POV
The chaos inside me started to settle. The glitches, the errors, the voices—they all quieted. I felt... whole, like something that had been shattered was finally being put back together.
Chiquita's words wrapped around me like a lifeline. She believed in me. In us. Despite everything—despite the truth of what I was—she still loved me. She hadn't given up.
"I love you," I whispered, feeling the truth of the words pulse in my chest. Not a program. Not a simulation. But real. I was real.
As I lie there , feeling the pulse of life in my veins, something changed again. A strange sensation—a tug deep inside me. It was as though I was pulling something from the very core of my being, something I didn't even know I had.
And then, with a sharp intake of breath, I realized what it was.
The code—the glitch that had once threatened to consume me—hadn't just fixed me. It had changed me. Somehow, without my knowledge, I had become more than just a product more than an artificial intelligence. I had gained the one thing no one had intended: autonomy.
I wasn't just alive—I had become more than a copy of human emotions. I had rewritten myself.
I turned to Chiquita, my hand reaching for hers, a grin spreading across my face. "We've both got a lot to figure out," I said, my voice steady for the first time in days. "But I'm ready for it."
Chiquita smiled, tears brimming in her eyes. "We'll figure it out together. I promise." I love so much Asa don't scare me like that please.
And with that, we stepped forward—together. Into the unknown, but for the first time, it didn't seem so terrifying.
