I was sitting on the ledge of the cliff, the ground beneath my feet solid yet daunting, the vast expanse of sky above me threatening with stormy clouds. My thoughts were a chaotic whirl until, suddenly, it all went black. Darkness enveloped me, swallowing every hint of light and thought. When I finally emerged from the void, the world around me was stark white, an endless expanse that stretched as far as my eyes could see. I called out, my voice echoing against a silent backdrop—was anyone else here? No response. My heartbeat thudded loudly in my chest, a reminder of my isolation.
Hours seemed to pass as I sat there, the silence creeping into my bones. I was virtually frozen, lost in the uncertainty of my whereabouts and the anxiety that loomed over me. But eventually, I pulled myself up and started to walk, trying to find direction in the featureless white landscape. Each step felt heavy, as if the very air was pressing against me. As I progressed, everything abruptly shifted; the brightness dimmed and became alien. Black surrounded me, an all-consuming presence, yet it felt strangely lit, as if the darkness was imbued with some unseen light.
With each step, I felt as if I were floating—a lack of grounding that filled my stomach with dread. My ears began to ring, a high-pitched wail that resonated deep within my mind, as if warning me of imminent danger. I shuddered, drenched in cold sweat; panic clawed at my throat. Was this real? Where was I? My thoughts spun like autumn leaves caught in a tempest.
Suddenly, I landed in an abrupt pit, a void that seemed to smell of ashes and despair. It was then that I saw them—my clones, but they were off, grotesque parodies of me, their eyes filled with wild madness. They unleashed a cacophony of screams that pierced my skull, echoing my deepest insecurities. "You'll never be good enough!" they yelled, their voices a twisted harmony of my own. "You should have stayed dead! You're a shadow of what you could be! Wukong was right about you!" Each word struck like arrows, lancing through my heart and igniting an ache that I had long buried. The sting of their accusations burned through my mind, and soon, hot tears cascaded down my face without mercy.
Clamping my hands over my ears, I wished for it all to stop. Miraculously, it did. Silence wrapped around me like a gentle embrace until—I felt a presence approach. Wukong. Confusion coursed through me as he approached; a surge of pain shot through my scalp as he yanked my hair, his glare intense and unyielding. "You really are useless, you coward," he spat, his words like venom. "No wonder every plan you've made has failed." "You are just a useless shadow." My heart raced, conflicted between hurt and disbelief. Then, everything darkened again.
I jolted awake, gasping for breath, tears still coursing down my cheeks. Wukong loomed above me, concern etched on his face. The other monkeys scurried about, their eyes wide with worry, creating a cocoon of chaos around us. I smacked Wukong's hand away when he reached for me, feeling both anger and sorrow swell in my chest. As I bolted from the gathering, I heard his voice behind me, calling my name, but I didn't stop.
Desperation gripped me; I ran through the forest, deep into the thrumming greenery that had once been my solace. Wukong chased after me, his heavy footsteps growing closer. Just when I thought I could lose him among the trees, he jumped on me from behind, catching me off guard as we tumbled to the ground. "Are you okay?" he asked, genuine concern spilling from his lips, and for a moment, it shattered my resolve.
"I haven't heard that one in a while," I murmured, my voice caught in the hollow spaces of my chest.
"Shut up," he said, but his tone was softer than I expected, devoid of the usual irritation. I felt a flicker of relief, yet the wave of memories stormed my mind, overwhelming me until I was afraid of what would burst forth next. Everything felt suffocating until, with careful precision, Wukong removed a leaf lodged in my fur. Unexpectedly, he scooped me up, and despite my protests, I couldn't fight against his strength. My body felt drained, and I let him carry me away, deep into the heart of his haven.
Once we settled into Wukong's house, he instructed the other monkeys to leave us. I still couldn't voice my turmoil, paralyzed by the weight of my emotions. "Are you alright?" he pressed, his tone shifting from gentle to concerned. I didn't respond, lost in a reverie of sorrow.
In an unlikely turn, instead of pressing for answers, he stood up and began to prepare porridge. I was startled by his gesture, a kindness I had almost forgotten was possible. There was a warmth in that hauntingly familiar act, a gentle learning I had seen blossom in him over time. As the rich aroma filled the air, I walked to the window, the soft sounds of running water below steadying my tumultuous heart.
We ate in silence, the simple act of sharing a meal somehow anchoring my drifting thoughts. Wukong began recounting stories, tales of his escapades, including the time he stole from the God of Wind. His voice wrapped around me, steady and soothing. As I leaned against him, feeling the rhythm of his heartbeat, I realized the fragility yet resilience of our bond.
Finally, after moments of shared silence, he turned to me, his eyes searching my face. "Are you okay with sharing what happened?" he asked carefully. My heart skipped a beat, the vulnerability of opening up feeling daunting. Hesitating, I decided it was worth the risk.
As I shared my nightmare, I noticed his expression shift from confusion to profound sadness. Each word fell from my lips like heavy stones, dragging my heart deeper into the abyss of despair. I recounted the darkness that haunted my nights, the shadows that whispered doubts and fears, wrapping me in a suffocating embrace. He didn't recoil; instead, he leaned in closer, his eyes filled with a tenderness that felt like a lifeline. It was as if he could see the ghosts that tormented me, each memory a crack in the facade I had built.
His compassion transcended the layers of our shared history, reaching into the very core of my pain. When I finally concluded, silence enveloped us, thick and heavy, but somehow comforting. He kissed me gently, his lips warm against my skin, anchoring me in the present moment. That kiss was a bittersweet reminder of love's resilience, a flicker of hope amid the storm.
"Everything will be alright," he whispered softly, pulling me under his chin. I felt an overwhelming wave of tranquility wash over me. As sleep tugged at my consciousness, I drifted off peacefully, wrapped in his warmth, knowing that I was no longer alone. In that moment, I found hope amidst the darkness. I would sleep soundly that night, and from that point forward, for years to come Hopefully.... I woke up again? But every thing was bright green I saw wukong picking peaches and mangoes
