The next day, Aria is officially introduced to Princess Hyosung. She is seven years old and quite knowledgeable and certainly speaks her mind. The moment they are introduced, the Princess announces to her new companion and tutor that she doesn’t like her.
“I don’t like you!” she says behind her little desk and folding her arms across her chest.
“Your Highness!” scolds Lady Hwang, Princess Hyosung’s court lady.
“Why not?” Aria says smiling sitting across the Princess. Back in America, she used to tutor young kids and encountered many like Princess Hyosung. So, she is quite used to it.
“Just because!” she whines looking away.
“Because isn’t an answer…don’t you want to learn things?”
“I already know more than you!” she snaps.
“How can you say that, Your Highness?” Lady Hwan demands. “Your father appointed her to be your tutor so she must be capable.
“Father did?” the Princess looks at her court lady with wide eyes.
“Yes, Your Highness,” she answers.
Princess Hyosung narrows her eyes at Aria suspiciously. “Don’t think about going anywhere my daddy, because he loves my mother!” she orders wagging a finger at her.
“Yes, Your Highness,” says Aria bending her head down to hide her smirk with hand. Suddenly, a thought occurs to her…was Min Woo Princess Hyosung’s father? And was she the daughter of the queen?
“His Majesty is here,” announces one of the palace maids.
Min Woo suddenly enters with his sidekicks behind him. He smiles at Princess Hyosung. “Daddy!” she cries running towards the King with outstretched hands.
Swooping her up in one motion, he twirls her around and hugs her. “How is my flower?” he asks looking into her eyes and giving her a warm smile.
“I’m fine, Daddy. But…”
“But what, my princess?”
“Why did you hire a tutor?” she whines pointing at Aria. Min Woo meets her eyes and raises his eyebrows. She looks away slightly embarrassed. She found it slightly uncomfortable to actually be teaching his daughter…
“She is very smart and I thought you could learn a few things from her,” he explains smiling at his daughter. “Just allow her to teach you and at least be your companion.”
She frowns and looks away. “Hui-bin is now entering, Your Majesty,” someone announces.
“Ah, your mother is here,” Min Woo comments without much emotion.
A very pretty woman enters and smiles radiantly at her daughter. Aria remembers that “Hui-bin” is usually reserved for the King’s Royal Noble Consorts and “Hui” means “radiant”. So, Princess Hyosung’s mother wasn’t the queen but in fact a concubines. Aria presses her lips tighter and looks away. “Mommy!” the Princess cries and hugs her mother.
