Secret Love

The moon hung heavy, a silver coin,
On velvet skies, the sea a join
Of darkness deep, where shadows slept,
And secrets in the ocean kept.

The sailor stood, his watch the third,
A lonely vigil, no sound stirred,
Save creaking mast and ocean's sigh,
Beneath the vast and starry sky.

Then from the depths, a voice arose,
A siren's song, sweet as a rose,
With haunting notes that pierced the night,
And filled his soul with strange delight.

A mermaid's call, a luring strain,
That promised love, and eased all pain,
He leaned to hear, his senses bound,
By magic in that eerie sound.

Her voice, a web, spun silver bright,
He longed to see her in the light,
To plunge beneath the waves and find,
The source of beauty, so refined.

The ship sailed on, the night wind blew,
But in his heart, the mermaid grew,
A haunting echo, sweet and low,
A secret love, he'd never know.
