10. The Second Hunt

I arrived at the museum at the stated time on the card, wearing my new dress and shoes. I had visited this museum while it was open earlier, to get a lay of the land. It was again from 1am - 4am. I had three hours, but this time I was confined to the floors of the museum.

"Miss Park," a man in a pig mask said from the door. Not one of the wolves. Were they waiting inside?

I walked up to the door where the guy opened it for me, nodding as I entered.

"Good luck." He said as he shut the door and I heard it lock behind me.

I find the seven wolves in the center of the large lobby, waiting for me. I stopped a bit in front of them, waiting for my instructions.

"Mina Park," the gray wolf addressed me. Are they going to say my full name every time? "Welcome to the second hunt."

"Tonight you have the three floors of this museum to hide. We trust you still have your safe card?" The red wolf asked and I nodded. "The rooftop garden is off limits. You are not to leave this building at any time or you will be disqualified."

"I have a question." I said, my eyes finding the green wolf. His gaze is trained on the floor. "Staff areas, are they off limits?"

I had not gotten a message on my phone with the map of the building like I had at the farm. I know from coming here and researching the building that the basement is staff only areas such as storage and the break areas and the tunnels that run through the building for maintenance and employees to move through.

"They are off limits." The blue nodded, sounding less intimidating than the others. The green wolf is still fixed on the floor. Is he really not going to look at me at all after what he did?

My mission was to unmask him. If not tonight then next time. But I will unmask the green one if it's the last thing I do in this game.

"Let's get this done." The black one said, sounding annoyed. "You have a fifteen minute head start."

"Fifteen? It was thirty last time. Will it get less each hunt?"

"Don't interrupt me." The black one said, angry now and I dropped my eyes. Had he been like this at the last hunt? "Your time starts now, I suggest you stop asking questions and go."

I wanted to argue, ask why he was being a jerk, but I couldn't spare that much time. I took off running toward the stairway, already knowing where I was heading.

The second floor has a mineral and gemstone exhibit and the entire room was like a cave. It was dark and there were various rocks and holes to hide in. Not to mention there is a tunnel behind one of the rocks that I can slip into if I think I am about to be caught.

I duck down behind the rock next to the door to the tunnel, making sure all of my dress is out of view.

I heard the airhorn from downstairs, signaling the wolves were loose. My heart was pounding in my chest again as I heard their loud footsteps take off. I tried to take a couple of deep breaths, telling myself it was going to be fine.

I see the red wolf enter the exhibit from where I sit. He looked around, checking under tables and machines. He was getting closer to me and I didn't want to take the chance of him finding me. I pushed on the door to the tunnel and slipped inside.

I don't wait to see if the red wolf heard me. I stand up from my hands and knees and take off running down the narrow hallway.

I could stay in here the full time, couldn't I? The wolves probably hadn't done any recon on this place like I had. I leaned against the wall, a sense of relief washing over me. This was going to be a cake walk.

"You are predictable." I heard someone say down the corridor. I looked to see the black wolf, both arms out to his side touching each wall. I guess I had been wrong.

I took off running, up the steps to my left since he was blocking the way down the hall. I hadn't wanted to go to the third floor. It was an art gallery and some interactive exhibits. I had no choice.

I went out the first door I came to, entering the interactive exhibit. There are VR headsets around the room and different things that make noise. I looked around for anything that would be helpful and the only thing I found was the mirror maze.

I ran into it without thinking, hearing the tunnel door open behind me. I couldn't let this one catch me. He seemed unreasonably angry downstairs.

I was met with several images of myself and I winced. The white of my dress is bright from all angles. I felt around, trying to make my way through it.

I saw several images of the black wolf when he entered the mirror maze.

"Seriously? This was a dumb idea, Mina." He said, calling me by name. Not my full name, not little lamb, but just Mina. Do I know this wolf, too?

I run into the glass several times as he gets closer and he laughs cruelly.

"I don't even want to catch you yet." He said. "Watching you this scared is a blast."

"Fucker." I muttered under my breath, fully prepared to use my safe card. But as I hit one of the mirrors in front of me it opened and I fell into a room. A trick mirror?

It was dark and I pulled out my phone, using my flashlight, looking around. All I caught was a door closing at the end of the small room. Had someone helped me?

I hurried toward the door and I am back in the interactive room, nobody else in sight. I don't think about it too much as I sprint out of the room and hopefully as far away from the black wolf as possible.

I needed to get off this floor. I made my way back to the tunnels and down to the first floor and into the ancient artifacts exhibit.

The tunnel door opened behind a large wooden display case. I peeked around it and immediately brought myself back, pressing as hard as I could against the display case.

The purple and the white wolves are in this room, but it looked like they were standing there talking instead of looking for me. Good to know all of these aren't as diligent as the black wolf.

"We still have an hour of this." The white wolf sighed.

"I don't want to catch her tonight." The purple one replied. "I think this entire thing is barbaric. She deserves to get accepted into the Cloaks without this."

Aw, thank you purple wolf. You are my new favorite.

"I don't care about that." The white one said. "I only care about my own acceptance. If that means catching her, so be it."

"Catching her has nothing to do with your acceptance." The purple one sounded annoyed. "The only way we don't get accepted is if she unmasks all of us. You just want the prize for catching her."

"Of course I do." The white one replied.

They don't get accepted into the cloaks if I unmask them, then? I stand still, wanting them to keep talking. I wanted to know more about this.

"Hey Green, what's up?" The purple one said, presumingly into his phone.

"I saw her on the second floor." The green wolf's voice comes over his speakerphone.

"We are headed that way." The purple one said. "Come on."

"She is becoming annoying." The white one said, but they both left the room.

What had the green wolf seen that he thought was me? Was he helping me since the black wolf was on a warpath? Why would he do that? He didn't even acknowledge me when I came in.

"There is a secret compartment in the sarcophagus. Right behind the mummy. It is a small enclosure, but you can hide there until time is up." The green wolf's voice was on the other side of the display case.

"Wh...why are you helping me?" I asked, pretty sure this is the third time tonight. "Shouldn't you catch me?"

"Consider it an apology." He said and then I heard him run out of the room.

I took his advice and stayed in the small hidden compartment of the mummy's sarcophagus until time was up. Giving me plenty of time to wonder what he was apologizing for. Ignoring me since the first hunt or what he had done that night in my room.
