It was one of those rare, peaceful nights at Watford, the kind where the chaos of magic and the endless cycle of schoolwork paused long enough for everyone to take a breath. The common room was unusually quiet, lit by the soft glow of candles that flickered gently against the stone walls. Outside, snow began to fall in thick, fluffy layers, muffling the sounds of the world beyond.
Simon Snow, Baz, Penny, and Agatha sat in a circle on the floor, the game of Truth or Dare having just started. Penny had insisted they all play, claiming it would be fun, a "well-deserved break" from the stress of magic and school. Simon had been reluctant at first. He wasn't particularly fond of the idea of truths being spilled—especially considering some of the more embarrassing secrets he had. But now that they were halfway through, Simon couldn't deny that the game had turned interesting.
Penny had been the first to go, choosing truth and then revealing the embarrassing fact that she used to practice casting spells with her eyes closed to make it more "dramatic." Agatha had gone next, taking a dare and doing an impressively accurate impersonation of a very annoyed Professor Thorne. That had earned a genuine laugh from Simon, and now it was his turn.
He looked over at Baz, who was lounging back against the armchair, his dark eyes gleaming with amusement. There was no telling what Baz would do, especially now that they were together. Simon felt a surge of warmth in his chest, despite himself. Things had been tense between them at the start of the school year, but now? They were together, and Simon couldn't imagine life without Baz by his side.
"Simon," Penny said, her voice teasing, "truth or dare?"
He glanced at Baz again, who raised an eyebrow, clearly expecting Simon to do something daring. Penny and Agatha were watching him intently, waiting for him to choose.
"Dare," Simon said, without thinking, locking eyes with Baz.
Baz smirked, clearly pleased with the choice.
"Alright," Penny said with a wicked grin. "I dare you to kiss Baz."
A wave of heat rushed to Simon's face, his heart skipping a beat. Baz was already sitting with that half-mocking, half-amused look on his face, clearly enjoying how flustered Simon had become.
"Really, Penny?" Simon tried to sound indignant, but his voice betrayed him with the tiniest quiver. "That's what you're going with?"
Penny just shrugged, her smile widening. "You're the one who picked dare."
Simon turned to Baz, feeling the weight of the eyes around them. Agatha was pretending to be interested in her shoes, but he knew she was just as curious as the others. And Baz? Well, Baz was never shy when it came to attention.
"Fine," Simon muttered under his breath, leaning toward Baz.
The moment their lips met, Simon was hit with a rush of electricity, as always. Baz's lips were soft, warm against his, the kiss slow and teasing at first, as if Baz were savoring the moment. Simon could feel the world around them fade. Everything but Baz disappeared in that instant—the game, the other students, the school. Just Baz.
When they pulled away, Simon's face was burning, and he couldn't look anywhere but Baz's eyes. He could see the faint glint of satisfaction there, and Simon hated how much that turned him on.
"Happy now?" Simon grumbled, though his voice was rougher than he intended.
Baz smirked, leaning back into his chair, clearly pleased. "I'm always happy when you're kissing me, Snow."
Penny snorted, clearly delighted with the results. "Alright, alright. Let's not get too distracted. Agatha, your turn. Truth or dare?"
Agatha rolled her eyes but chose truth. "Fine, truth. But no funny business."
Penny raised an eyebrow, clearly calculating. "What's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you in the last month?"
Agatha narrowed her eyes, but she seemed to hesitate. "That's easy," she said after a beat. "I accidentally called Professor Thorne 'mum' while asking about the assignment on potion ingredients."
Simon, Baz, and Penny all burst out laughing. Agatha's face flushed bright red, and she muttered something about wanting to escape into the next dimension.
"Okay, my turn!" Baz suddenly declared, sounding far too enthusiastic. He leaned forward, his gaze zeroing in on Simon with a predatory gleam in his eyes. Simon immediately felt his stomach drop.
"Truth or dare, Snow?" Baz asked, his voice low and teasing.
Simon hesitated for a moment, then with a deep breath, said, "Dare."
Baz's smile was slow, calculating. He seemed to savor the moment, weighing his options. The others were watching him expectantly.
"Alright," Baz said after a pause, his voice smooth. "I dare you to..." His eyes flickered toward Penny and Agatha, then back to Simon, "...to declare in front of all of us that I'm the best boyfriend you've ever had."
Simon's heart thudded in his chest. Baz was asking him to say that in front of everyone, in front of Penny and Agatha, who knew the complexities of their relationship. It wasn't that Simon didn't feel that way; it was just that it was hard to say it out loud, especially when he wasn't great with words.
But Baz was looking at him expectantly, a hint of mischief in his gaze. Simon took a deep breath, feeling the weight of everyone's gaze on him.
"Well," Simon started, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck, "I guess if I'm being honest..." He looked at Baz, letting his nerves settle for a moment before he continued, "...you're the best boyfriend I've ever had. No one even comes close."
A silence fell over the group. For a split second, Simon felt exposed, vulnerable—but then Baz's eyes softened, and a genuine smile tugged at his lips. Penny and Agatha both exchanged glances, but they didn't tease. They seemed to understand.
Baz leaned forward, his gaze intense. "Good answer," he said, voice hushed.
Simon flushed, but Baz reached out and squeezed his hand, a small gesture of reassurance. Penny and Agatha gave each other knowing smiles, and there was something unspoken between the four of them. The game continued on with more dares, more truths, but Simon's mind kept returning to that moment, to the way Baz's hand felt in his. To the way Baz had made him say something that, in the past, would have made him nervous, but now just felt right.
When the game finally wrapped up, the group was sprawled on the floor, laughing and exhausted. Simon glanced at Baz, whose head was resting on his shoulder. There were no more dares, no more games, just the comfort of each other's company. Simon couldn't help but smile to himself.
Tonight had been fun. But with Baz by his side, Simon knew it didn't matter if they were playing a game or just sitting quietly together—he had everything he needed. And for the first time in a long while, Simon felt complete.
