Liam sprinted towards his mother, desperate to reach her in time before the dogs did.

Rocks, dirt and dust flew up into the air as he ran, his paws scratching the slightly frozen ground.

Come on... Come on...

Finally, Liam arrived at his mother's side, his ears flattened against his skull as he spat at the dogs, his hair standing straight.

He was terrified, sure, but he would not let these mutts hurt his mother.

A dark grey wolf-dog walked up in front of the others, snarling.

"Well well well, what do we have here?~"

She sneered before looking back at the other dogs.

"Get her."

The other dogs in the pack obeyed, starting to chase after Opal again, snapping their jaws at her tail.

Liam bristled and started to give chase but Jade stepped in front of him, smirking.

"Ah ah ah, I don't think it's time to go yet... I'm not done."

Liam faced her, narrowing his eyes.

"Back off."

He ordered, not intimidated in the slightest by her.

She narrowed her eyes back and scoffed.

"Like I would obey some runt. What are you? A mole?"

Liam hissed at that, lunging for her neck but she simply stepped to the side, serving Liam to fall to the ground with an "oomph".

Liam struggled to get up but when he did he stopped what he was doing, horrified.

A few yards away from him lay his mother, stained red with her own blood. And over her was Jade, the leader of the pack of canines.

Liam, filled with adrenaline from the grief and rage flowing through him freely, got up quickly, running towards Jade tackling her to the ground.

"Argh! Get off pest!"

Jade tried to throw him off of her but he wouldn't budge, sinking his teeth deep into her shoulder.

The wolf-dog howled with agony, turning around to face the black and white cat.

She regretted that decision because right when she did, Liam flew at her face, sinking his claws directly into her right eye, spraying blood on the rain damp grass below.
