In an attempt to secure a spot in the WTC final the following year, South Africa has selected Temba Bavuma to play two Test matches against Sri Lanka after he recovered from an elbow injury. The South African captain, Bavuma, has not played since he injured himself while diving to establish his position during an ODI match against Ireland in Abu Dhabi on October 4.

Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Gerald Coetzee, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, and Kyle Verreynne comprise the South Africa Test team.

Because South Africa will be attending a two-day camp in Pretoria on the same day, he was unable to play in the Lions' first two first-class games and will not be available for Thursday's match against Western Province at the Wanderers. They will go to Durban on Saturday, where the first Test begins on Wednesday.

Gerald Coetzee, who returned to international action after conditioning rests in the India series, Marco Jansen, and Kagiso Rabada, who was rested for the T20I series against India that concluded on Friday, are also back in the mix. Jansen and Coetzee last played Tests between January and December against India.

It was the final home series for South Africa and the final one for Dean Elgar before his retirement. The players who participated in that rubber, Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger, are sidelined due to injuries. Keegan Petersen and Zubayr Hamza are the selectorial casualties from that series in contrast to this one. The 14 includes Ryan Rickelton, Senuran Muthusamy, and Dane Paterson—one player less than usual—to "provide players on the fringe of selection the opportunity to play first-class cricket for their respective provincial teams," according to a statement quoting Shukri Conrad.

South Africa will go to the WTC final at Lord's in June if they win both Test matches against the Lankans and the two matches they have scheduled at home against Pakistan in December and January.

Schedule:

First Test: November 27–December 1, Kingsmead, Durban

Second Test: December 5–9, St George's Park, Gqeberha
