Running through a tall archway, I heard the stone above me shatter as Smaug knocked into it. I stopped, turning to see the flags fall. I ran to move out of the way, but the heavy material landed on top of me, sending me to the ground, face first. "You think you could deceive me, Barrel-rider? You have come from Laketown. This is some sordid scheme hatched between these filthy Dwarves and those miserable tub-trading Lakemen," Smaug assumed as I watched him from under the thick flag. "Those sniveling cowards with their long bows and Black Arrows. Perhaps it is time I paid them a visit," Smaug turned.

"Oh, no." I whispered to myself, trying to climb out from underneath the fabric. "This isn't their fault! Wait! You cannot go to Laketown!" I shouted to the dragon, who froze at my words.

"You care about them, do you? Good. Then you can watch them die," he told me, turning back around. If dragons could smirk, he would be doing it right now.

"Here!" I heard Thorin shout and Smaug froze again. "You witless worm! I am taking back what you stole." Smaug turned, stalking towards where Thorin stood on top of a stone statue. I followed, watching from behind a stone pillar.

"You will take nothing from me, Dwarf. I laid low your warriors of old. I instilled terror in the hearts of Men. I am King Under the Mountain." Smaug rose up so he was eye level with Thorin.

"This is not your kingdom. These are Dwarf lands. This is Dwarf gold. And we will have our revenge." Slowly, Thorin reached up and grabbed a rope. He yelled something in Dwarvish before pulling it. There was a bunch of clanking before the braces that held the rocks together fell to the floor and the stones tumbled down after them. As they fell, they revealed a golden statue of a King, who I concluded was Thror. I gasped, stunned by its magnificence as Smaug stared at it, enthralled. All of a sudden, gold came rushing out of the eye as it fell apart, still hot. Smaug backed away as the gold statue melted to the ground, covering his feet. The gold filled the floor, submerging the dragon. All was silent as we stared, waiting. Smaug burst out, covered in the searing hot gold and I backed away from the pillar, eyes wide.

"Revenge? Revenge? I will show you revenge," Smaug roared. I quickly followed behind as he burst through the destroyed front gate and shot up into the air, the gold slipping off his body. Running out, I stopped at a piece of a statue, knees buckling as I stared, wide-eyed, at the dragon's figure growing smaller.

"What have we done?"
