Alex was lying on the bed in her small room and watching TV. She didn't have the nerve for anything else at the moment and there was nothing else she could do in the room anyway. And she wasn't allowed to leave.
She switched through all the channels and found nothing that interested her for more than two minutes. They were all just reporting on the prison break or the latest murder cases, which she didn't really want to know about. They were discussing where he might be, who helped him and who was to blame for the breakout. She finally gave up the search and got stuck on some channel.
She would prefer to be very far away. Far away from him and from everyone involved, away from this continent and away from this planet. Just fly through space alone and discover strange worlds. She closed her eyes and imagined the craziest things she would do without gravity. Would it be fun to travel through space?
But reality quickly caught up with her and she was lying alone in a hotel room in San Francisco again.
Suddenly she heard a dull noise in the hallway and there was a knock on the door. She paused. There was a second knock. She stood up very slowly and kept her eyes on the door. She crept silently to the door and peered through the spy hole. On the other side she saw someone in hotel clothes, so she opened the door.
She immediately noticed the policeman on the floor who had been standing guard in front of her room door. She panicked and tried to close the door again, but the hotel employee pushed it open effortlessly and was already in the room. She stumbled backwards a few steps and was terribly afraid. The man closed the door and walked towards her. He smiled strangely.
»It wasn't easy to find you. Half the city is cordoned off, so it took a little longer than expected«, he said casually.
»What?« she replied in disbelief.
Alex stared at him. Something moved in his eyes. They turned white and deformed in an unusual way and sharp teeth appeared in his mouth. Then she recognized Venom again and the shock subsided a little.
»Eddie insisted on getting you because Cletus is running amok out there. He was unavailable at short notice, so I'm here now.«
»So you can jump from body to body?!«, she exclaimed in astonishment.
After everything that had happened today, she actually thought that nothing could have shocked her so quickly. How wrong she was...
He looked frightening, but the fact that he wanted to get her to safety reassured her. After all, he didn't do anything to her the last time they met.
»Yes. Now let's go, time is running out.«
He gestured towards the door and let his face become inconspicuous again.
She grabbed her cell phone and walked to the door when they both felt a tremor that shook the entire room. The lamp and the television also flickered briefly. Both of them stopped dead in their tracks. Then another one, stronger this time, so that the furniture shook as well.
»Ist das ein Erdbeben?«, flüsterte Alex.
Venom shook his head. The fact that he looked worried scared her.
With the third quake, the lights went out. Now they were groping in the dark, only a little light from the surrounding high-rise buildings shone through the glass panes. Venom went to the window and looked outside. The power had only gone out in their building.
»We have to get out of here as quickly as possible.«
»What's going on?«, asked Alex, confused.
»I don't know, but we have to leave before an alarm goes off. The frequencies could kill me«, he explained.
»Oh okay, but do we take the stairs or-?«
