Sophie sighed as she readied herself for school, tugging an eyelash out in trepidation as she worried for the day to come. It was her first day at this new place- Topwevi High School. As someone who had moved from many different schools in few years, she didn't expect to make any long-lasting friendships and just wanted to get through this year with her head down and reasonable grades.

Pulling on a bright red tank top and baggy light blue jeans, she did her warm blonde hair in a casual low ponytail. Yanking on a pair of beaten-up white converse, she hoped this school wasn't like the last one- where the girls were giggly and judgemental, and the boys were obnoxious and distracting.

Her mum had already left for work, (as per usual) and she started the walk to school. It was a bright, sunny morning and her spirits were already lifted by the beauty of her new neighbourhood. Glancing around, she noticed all the houses were large and even ostentatious- the trees were lusciously green with smooth silver bark, and perfectly trimmed. The footpath was neat and smooth.

Her dad had complained about the snobbiness of the suburb at dinner. 'These rich people are so entitled..." She had zoned out for the rest of the rant. She for one, was pretty happy to be settled in such an aesthetically pleasing area. Their house was noticeably less extravagant than the others around her, but did it really matter?

Arriving before the school gates, she took a deep breath. You got this, Sophie Foster. You are smart, reasonably good looking, and you have passable social skills. (It didn't help to be delusional)

There was a boy waiting at the front gates with an eager smile. He looked her age- with strawberry blonde hair and striking blue eyes. He caught her confused look and darted furtively through the crowd towards her.

"Hey! Are you Sophie Foster??" he asked enthusiastically, stepping into her personal space. But his smile was so endearing she managed to smile back.

"Uh- yeah that's me." She replied, amused.

"My name's Dex- I know- weird name- and I'm here to show you around! I think we are in the same core classes- it's a big school and I want to make sure you don't get lost-" his speech was rapid-fire. Sophie blinked, slightly disorientated.

He paused, waiting for a reply. He was quite tall, Sophie noticed. She didn't say anything, only nodded thoughtfully.

"Come on!" cried Dex happily, grabbing her upper arm and pulling her through the crowd. "We have Maths first period! I actually love maths- weird, I know, but it just makes sense with all the numbers- and formulas-"

Sophie was rather drawn towards this excited boy. Her nerves eased slightly and she relaxed as he kept up his relentless commentary. The school was massive, it was true. He led her down winding staircases, through multiple corridors with windows reaching from the bottom of the wall to the very top, through a miscellaneous greenhouse with some suspicious plants, past an aquatic centre and up a small staircase.

She would have been totally lost without him. And he kept up a pleasant stream of chatter the entire time, seeming entirely comfortable in her company, even asking her a few questions now and then.

"You lived in New Zealand for a whole year?? Wow! What was it like?" he asked, his eyes fixated on her face in awe.

"..It was good, I guess. It was really beautiful. I just didn't have many friends." Replied Sophie, shocked at how vulnerable she was being with this total stranger.

"You?? Not have many friends?? That's insane! I mean- you're really pretty and seem super chill."

Sophie blushed in surprise, laughing slightly.
