Biana pursed her glittery lips. "Dare."
"Fine," squeaked Amy thoughtfully. "I dare you to.... sing 'Mary had a little lamb' three times!"
Biana rolled her eyes, her fake lashes almost falling off with the vigour of her sarcasm. Sophie cringed. Having the most popular girl in her drab living room interacting with her embarrassing sister was hard work.
"I'm not doing that," sighed Biana, " That's a terrible dare."
 Amy's shoulders slumped.
"Sophie." Inquired Biana, business -like, interlocking her fingers as if she was some mastermind villainess.
Sophie nodded warily.
"Truth or Dare?"
She decided to play it safe. "Truth."
Biana sighed. "That's not boring at all..."
This girl was sighing so much she sounded like a balloon with a hole in it, slowly collapsing. Sophie grinned at the mental image of a flat Biana, deflated.
"What are you smiling at?" asked Fitz, his teeth sparkling white.
"Nothing."
"Shh. I need to think of a Truth to ask you," shushed Biana, twisting a lock of hair around a finger, "I know. I got it. Do you have a crush on Keefe?"
Sophie blanched.
Biana's eyes were clear, her expression earnest.
"No- no of course not! No- just no." she stammered, going bright red.
Fitz narrowed his eyes.
Sophie wondered desperately why she would ask that sort of thing. Had she given Biana a suspicion that she liked Keefe? Did Keefe think that she was pining after him, like a lost puppy that had fallen in love at first sight? Did she like Keefe? Wait- how could such an absurd notion cross her mind? Of course she didn't like Keefe. What a ridiculous idea. She wanted to curl in on herself and disappear with mortification.
But when Sophie examined closer, she saw Biana let out a breath... of relief?
Did Biana like Keefe?
Sophie honestly wasn't sure how to feel about that. It shouldn't affect her- she didn't like Keefe! But for some reason, it hurt a little bit, deep inside. Like a splinter.
"Your turn to ask someone, Sophie," piped up Amy helpfully.
Sophie suppressed a groan. Why was her sister here again?
"Fine. Biana. Truth or Dare?" she asked without thinking.
She probably should have asked someone else, like Fitz. But meeting his blinding teal eyes made her heartbeat speed up. She didn't want to address him, scared she would humiliate herself. But Biana was getting dared and truthed a lot.
Biana twisted her lips into a bitter grin. She sat up from her slouch of bad attitude, obviously loving to be the centre of attention.
"Dare."
Her sparkly lipstick was smudging. She still looked stunning.
Sophie hadn't expected her to choose that for some reason. Ugh, now she actually had to think of a dare that was interesting.
"Do you have Dex's number?" Sophie asked, suddenly inspired with a wild plan.
Biana rolled her eyes. "I have everyone's number. I know everyone in this year. Probably in the whole school."
Sophie grinned bitterly. Knowing someone wasn't the same as just knowing their name or number. All Biana did was judge people, then convince herself that she knew them. Everyone thought she was popular, but she was really just a hot girl with a mean heart.
"Fine. Call up Dex and apologise for insulting him today in maths," challenged Sophie, raising her eyebrows grandly and leaning back slightly onto the couch like some kind of mafia boss.
Biana's lips thinned. "No."
"It's a dare. You can either be a chicken or do it," goaded Sophie, "Come on Biana."
She felt incredibly smug watching Biana struggle. Fitz pursed his lips.
"What does she mean you insulted Dex in maths?" he asked Biana curiously.
"It was nothing!" snapped Biana, waving him away. "Fine, I'll do it."
Sophie let out a breath of satisfaction as she watched Biana swallow her pride and call Dex on a hot-pink phone drenched in rhinestones. Sophie almost rolled her eyes. It was so in character of Biana to have a phone like that. After an eternity of ringing, there was a burst of static.
"Uh- who is this?" came Dex's bewildered voice through the phone.
"This is Biana," declared Biana flatly, "I was just calling to apologise for insulting you in maths today. What I said wasn't cool and I hope you can forgive me."
And she immediately hung up, tapping the 'end' button on her screen so aggressively, as if she was prodding Dex's eyeball.
"That wasn't so hard, was it?" taunted Sophie haughtily.
But Biana was ready. "Truth or Dare, Sophie Foster." She spat.
Sophie felt a rush of adrenaline coursing through her veins. Her eyes brightened. She could do anything. She had forced Biana to apologise, arguably the coolest girl in her year group. She had stood up for her friend.
She was on top of the world!
"Dare."
Biana's lips pulled into an evil grin. Suddenly, Sophie was horribly reminded of an evil clown movie she had watched. The resemblance was striking.
Her possessed leer caused a shiver to run down Sophie's spine. Sweat beaded on her forehead. This was a mistake. She should have stuck with a Truth. She braced herself for whatever nefarious deed Biana wanted her to commit, jolting when she heard the command-
"I dare you to kiss Fitz."
Sophie's heart actually stopped. Like paused, for a split second. She BASICALLY DIED of shock, for a short moment.
Amy squeaked in shocked delight. Fitz's eyes widened.
"Sophie- you don't have to." He whispered comfortingly, "It's your decision."
Her mind whirled between her choices, as she slightly hyperventilated. She could kiss Fitz and feel humiliated forever as a bad kisser or an awkward person. Or she could kiss him and maybe it would be fantastic, and he would fall in love with her immediately? Hope splintered her heart like a shard of glass. She could refuse the dare, and end up safe, with no consequences at all. But at the smug tilt of Biana's perfect chin, she knew she couldn't simply refuse.
She couldn't be a chicken.
But Fitz- he was so perfect, carved out of marble. And she was just- Sophie. With stretch marks and cellulite and pores and slight acne sometimes. Fitz would never like a girl like her. And she glanced at his lips and knew she couldn't do it.
But as she opened her mouth to refuse, she was silenced by the consuming heat of his perfect lips on hers.
