Tender, perfect. The kiss was over too fast, and all Sophie understood was how much she craved his touch, desired urgently to keep kissing him, to drink him in together. He was like water and she was thirsty. But she couldn't. Not here. Not now.

And he didn't like her, it was just a dare.

So she pulled away, her cheeks crimson. A light blush also dusted Fitz's cheeks, his lips red. But apart from that, he didn't seem embarrassed.

Sophie wondered bitterly how many girls he had already kissed.

Amy squeaked in shock.

She let out a soft exhale. What just happened?

There was an awkward silence.

Biana looked super depressed all of a sudden, her face pinched and her lips thin. Sophie wanted to stab her. She was the one who had done this to her, had ruined a potential friendship.

Sophie suddenly didn't know what to do with her arms. She wasn't sure if she was a good kisser, she had only kissed one boy, last year. It was a whole thing- but Fitz was an amazing kisser, definitely better than the awkward boy she had kissed. Sophie was beginning to suspect that he was amazing at everything he did.

"Sorry if I made you uncomfortable." apologised Fitz calmly. But his wary gaze betrayed his real emotions, if only she could decipher them.

"No... no it's okay.." stuttered Sophie, pulling out an eyelash jerkily. But was it okay? Everything was different now, everything had changed. She could never look at Fitz ever again without imagining his soft lips and impossible warmth. His hair flopped over his eyes and Sophie longed to be able to lean forward and brush it back. To be able to touch him, to feel him.

It should not be legal to make someone feel this way without actually liking them.

This was awful, like she was being tortured, having the perfect kiss with someone she liked without the feelings being reciprocated. She wanted to burst into tears, sick with resentment.

"I- need to go to the bathroom," muttered Sophie, suddenly feeling disgusting in her own skin. She just needed to compose herself.

No one replied. Biana avoided her gaze.

Her footsteps seemed too loud in the thick silence. Sophie scurried out of the room, feeling ashamed of herself. She shouldn't have let him kiss her. She shouldn't have said Dare. This was definitely the last time she would ever accept a dare. Or talk to Fitz again.

She rounded the corner into the bathroom, not bothering to close the door. She leant on the sink and stared into the mirror, slowing her breathing. Her shadowed face stared unblinkingly back at her, impossibly cold and dark in the glass.

Sophie flinched suddenly, stumbling back in shock to fall on top of the (thankfully closed) toilet seat with a clank.

Fitz had followed her, his tall frame blocking the only escape route out of the bathroom.

She was boxed in.

"Sophie." He whispered, "I don't want things to be awkward between us. I'm sorry for springing this all onto you, since we haven't known each other for long, but I really like you and I want you to be my girlfriend."

Sophie wanted to cry again.

What?

Her head spun. Was she hearing correctly? Fitz Vacker wanted to be her boyfriend? This was all so overwhelming. Before she could think it through, her mouth betrayed her.

"Yeah.... Sure." She muttered, going crimson.

But it was too gloomy in the bathroom for Fitz to see her vulnerability. She was shrouded in shadow.

"Great."

She could hear the smile in his voice, see his teeth almost glowing in the dimness. And he was moving towards her. Oh gosh, was she dreaming right now? Since when did things like this happen to her?

He pulled her to her feet, almost crushing her into his embrace. Sophie jolted with the shock of his body heat against hers, his lips found hers and he grabbed her face, pushing it against his. Sophie let out a gasp of surprise as his lips slid against his. It was all so much- so hot- so unexpected-

"Sophie?" her mothers voice.

Her skin twinged with panic. She shoved Fitz guiltily away from her, stepping towards the doorway of the bathroom in a useless attempt to block her mother's vision.

But she had already seen enough.

"This is disgusting." She hissed, her eyes daggers. "I will be having a long chat with you after the Vackers leave. All of you, dinner is ready. Go to the kitchen. Now."

Sophie's eyes widened with fear. Her mother was going to be so mad at her. But then it hit her. Why should she be mad? All she had done was kiss someone she was going to become involved in a relationship with. The thought still made her giddy, but her mother had no right to get her in trouble because she had made her own decision.

Sophie lifted her chin. She could stand up for herself. She could craft her own path.

Her mother turned away from them to summon the other kids for dinner, shooting Sophie a death glare over her shoulder.

"Sorry again," whispered Fitz in her ear, his breath hot on her cheek.

"It's okay," replied Sophie, "More then okay." She added mischievously.

He chuckled.

The dinner was long and awkward, and almost immediately afterwards the Vackers left, not giving Sophie a chance to talk to Fitz. As soon as they had left, her mother rounded on her.

"I can't believe you would make out with that boy. You're too young to behave like such a slut!" she screeched, "You haven't known him for more than two hours!"

Sophie flinched. How dare she use such a word to describe her! Not only was that extremely sexist, her mother didn't even know her side of the story.

"What happened, Mary?" asked her dad gravely.

"I walked into the bathroom and witnessed our daughter making out with Fitz!" yelled her mother, pacing up and down the room.

"Fitz?" questioned her dad obliviously, "Who's that again?"

"Oh my gosh dad! Don't you know anything?" spat Sophie. She didn't mean to, it just burst out.

"How dare you talk to me like that!" scolded her dad, eyes darkening. "You little brat. I thought we raised you better."

"Give me a break!" Sophie's voice was rising in volume periodically. All the screaming was causing her anxiety. "It was my first day of school today, can I just go to bed?!"

"You rude girl," growled her mother, shoulders tensing. "I can't believe we have such a disappointing, irresponsible daughter. Get out of our house!"

Sophie shrugged nonchalantly, all-consuming rage boiling in her veins.

"I would rather live on the streets than with you." She hissed, barely audible. "All my life you've made it pretty clear you wouldn't care much either. I hope you choke on your dinner."

And with that, ignoring all the cries and threats called at her retreating back, she left her parents behind and started the long walk towards her godmother, Edaline's home.

Sophie glanced up at the sky and realised with a sinking heart that it had began to rain.
