Chapter Four: Cracks in the Foundation
Elleyanna Fernandez sat at her desk, staring blankly at the open book in front of her. The words blurred together, their meaning lost in the haze of her thoughts. She had always prided herself on her ability to focus, on her determination to excel. But ever since Vincenzo Moretti had walked into her life, everything felt… off.
It wasn’t just his presence that lingered in her mind, though that alone was enough to unnerve her. It was the way he spoke in riddles, the way his eyes seemed to see through her defenses, the way danger clung to him like a second skin.
Her phone buzzed, breaking her reverie. She glanced at the screen to find a message from her best friend, Nadia.
Nadia: You okay? You’ve been MIA all week. Coffee tomorrow?
Elleyanna hesitated before typing a quick response.
Me: Yeah, sorry. Tomorrow sounds good.Setting the phone down, she leaned back in her chair, her mind drifting to the strange events of the past few days. Vincenzo’s cryptic warning at the café replayed in her head: “Curiosity is a double-edged sword.”
What had he meant by that? And why had he seemed so protective when he showed up outside her apartment?
A knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. She frowned, glancing at the clock. It was nearly 10 p.m. Who would be visiting her at this hour?
Rising cautiously, she made her way to the door, peeking through the peephole.
No one was there.
Her heart skipped a beat. She opened the door slowly, her eyes darting up and down the dimly lit hallway. A single envelope lay on the floor, her name scrawled across it in elegant, unfamiliar handwriting.
She picked it up, her fingers trembling slightly, and closed the door behind her. Sitting back at her desk, she carefully opened the envelope. Inside was a single piece of paper, folded neatly.
The message was short, but it sent a chill down her spine.
Be careful who you trust. The wolves are closer than you think.
She stared at the note, her heart racing. Who had left it? And what did it mean?

The Past Resurfaces
Sleep didn’t come easily that night. Elleyanna tossed and turned, her mind spinning with questions. By the time her alarm blared the next morning, she felt as though she hadn’t slept at all.
At the café, Nadia was already waiting for her, a steaming cup of coffee in hand. Her friend’s dark curls framed her face, and her expression turned from excitement to concern the moment Elleyanna walked in.
“Whoa. You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Nadia said, motioning for her to sit.
Elleyanna offered a weak smile. “Rough night.”
“Clearly.” Nadia leaned forward, her voice lowering. “What’s going on with you? You’ve been so distant lately. Is it… a guy?”
Elleyanna’s stomach twisted. “No. It’s… complicated.”
Nadia raised an eyebrow. “Complicated how?”
Elleyanna hesitated. She wanted to tell Nadia everything—about Vincenzo, the strange note, the way her life felt like it was spinning out of control. But something held her back. It wasn’t just fear; it was a strange sense of loyalty to a man she barely knew.
“It’s just school stuff,” she said finally. “You know, senior year stress.”
Nadia didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t push. “Well, whatever it is, don’t let it consume you. You’re one of the smartest people I know, El. You’ve got this.”
Elleyanna forced a smile, but her friend’s words did little to calm the storm inside her.

A Dangerous Connection
Later that afternoon, as Elleyanna walked across campus, her thoughts were still preoccupied with the note. So much so that she didn’t notice the black car idling at the curb until it pulled up beside her.
The passenger window rolled down, and Vincenzo’s familiar face appeared.
“Get in,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
She hesitated, her heart pounding. “Why?”
“Because we need to talk. And not here.”
Something in his expression told her this wasn’t a request. Against her better judgment, she opened the door and slid into the car.
The interior was sleek and smelled faintly of leather. Vincenzo sat beside her, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp, scanning the street as the car pulled away.
“What’s going on?” she demanded.
“You tell me,” he replied, his voice calm but edged with tension. “You received a note last night, didn’t you?”
Her blood ran cold. “How do you know about that?”
His jaw tightened. “Because I’ve spent the last 24 hours making sure no one acts on it.”
She stared at him, the weight of his words sinking in. “What does that mean? Who sent it?”
Vincenzo sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “It means you’re in deeper than you realize, Elleyanna. And the people I’ve been trying to protect you from are starting to take notice.”
She swallowed hard, her pulse racing. “Protect me from what?”
“From my world,” he said simply. “The note was a warning. A not-so-subtle reminder that no one connected to me is ever truly safe.”
She shook her head, frustration bubbling to the surface. “I didn’t ask for this, Vincenzo. I didn’t ask for you to pull me into… whatever this is.”
“No,” he agreed, his gaze locking with hers. “But now that you’re here, you need to understand something: there are rules to this game. And breaking them can get you killed.”
Elleyanna’s breath hitched. She had thought Vincenzo was mysterious, maybe even dangerous. But now, she was beginning to see the truth.
This wasn’t just a game.
This was life and death.
