Chapter Ten: The Weight of Loss

Vincenzo stood at the doorway, watching Elleyanna’s figure recede into the darkness of the night. The door clicked shut softly behind her, but it felt like the sound of an entire world breaking.

He leaned against the frame, his hand resting on the door’s edge, his body rigid with an intensity that he couldn’t shake. She was gone. Not physically, not yet—but emotionally. And that was worse.

It had been the hardest decision of his life, watching her walk away. He had told himself it was for her own good, that he was giving her the freedom she deserved. But inside, it felt like he had just lost the one thing that made his life bearable.

The Calm Before the Storm

For the next few days, Vincenzo kept himself busy with the family’s operations. But his mind was never fully present. He was constantly distracted, replaying the last moments he had shared with Elleyanna over and over.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her face—soft, uncertain, but determined. She had made her choice, and as much as it pained him, he respected it.

But every part of him wanted to undo it. To bring her back and hold her close, to convince her that staying with him was the only way to stay safe.

He’d always been in control—of his business, of his emotions, of everything. But with Elleyanna, he had lost that control. And for the first time in his life, he didn’t know how to fix it.

The Aftermath

A few days later, Vincenzo received a call from Matteo.

"She’s gone, Vincenzo," Matteo said, his tone flat. "We’ve lost track of her."

The words hit him like a punch. "What do you mean ‘lost track’? She’s been gone for days."

"I mean no one can find her. She’s gone off the grid." Matteo’s voice grew cold. "We told you this would happen."

Vincenzo gripped the phone tighter, his knuckles turning white. "You don’t understand. She left on her own terms. She’s not in danger."

"We’re tracking every move you make," Matteo shot back. "You’re not the only one who wants her safe. And if something happens to her—"

"Nothing will happen to her." Vincenzo cut him off, his voice like steel. "I’ll find her myself."

Chasing Shadows

Vincenzo spent the next few days combing through every lead, every connection he had in the city, trying to track down Elleyanna. He used every resource at his disposal, pulling strings, making deals, and even threatening some of the city’s most powerful players.

But no one seemed to know where she was. It was as if she had vanished into thin air.

Every failed lead pushed him further into a spiral of guilt and fear. What if she was out there, in danger, and he wasn’t there to protect her? What if he had pushed her too far, given her too much freedom, and now she was paying the price for it?

He cursed himself for letting her go. He should’ve insisted. He should’ve made her stay.

But even as those thoughts plagued him, there was a nagging voice in the back of his mind—the same one that had whispered to him when she first left: You did the right thing. She needed to make her own choices. You had to let her go.

He didn’t know if he believed it.

An Unexpected Visitor

Days turned into a week. Vincenzo had nearly given up, his heart heavy with regret, when a figure appeared at his door.

It was Nadia.

She had always been a loyal friend to Elleyanna, and when Vincenzo saw her standing in the doorway, he was taken aback.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, his voice a mix of surprise and wariness.

“I came to find you,” Nadia said, her voice firm, but soft with concern. “I need to talk to you about Elleyanna.”

Vincenzo’s heart skipped a beat. “What about her?”

“She’s gone, Vincenzo.” Nadia’s eyes were filled with the same worry that had been haunting him for days. “I know you’re looking for her, but you need to stop.”

Vincenzo’s eyes darkened, and he stepped closer, his presence looming. “What are you talking about?”

Nadia took a deep breath, meeting his gaze. “I don’t know where she is. But I do know this—you can’t keep looking for her. If you push any harder, you’ll lose her for good.”

The words stung, sharper than he expected.

“She made her choice,” Nadia continued, her voice softer now. “You have to respect that, or she’ll never come back.”

Vincenzo stood frozen for a long moment, the weight of her words sinking in. He had known it was true, deep down, but hearing it aloud made it more real.

He couldn’t make her stay. He couldn’t control her anymore.

The Turning Point

Later that night, Vincenzo stood on the balcony of his penthouse, looking out at the city. The cold breeze tugged at his coat, but it did little to numb the ache inside.

She’s out there somewhere, he thought. But I can’t keep holding on. I can’t force her to come back.

For the first time in days, he allowed himself to think about something other than finding Elleyanna. What would happen if she never came back? What if she built a life outside of him, outside of this world he had tried to protect her from?

It was a thought that terrified him. But more than that, it was a realization: He had been suffocating her with his need to protect her.

He had tried to control everything—to control her. But she was right. She wasn’t a prisoner to him, and neither was he.

If she came back, it would be on her own terms. But if she didn’t, he would have to learn to live with it.

A New Path Forward

A week later, Vincenzo finally accepted the reality. He couldn’t keep searching for her—couldn’t keep trying to pull her back into his world.

He made the decision to let her go.

He would fight for her, in his own way, but he wouldn’t drag her back into this life. If she was meant to return, she would.

And if she didn’t?

Vincenzo would have to find a way to live with the fact that he had lost her—not because of the De Lucas or the business—but because of the choices they had both made.
