Chapter Eight: A Move in the Shadows

Vincenzo didn’t sleep that night. He sat at his desk, the weight of his family’s future pressing down on him. The photo of Elleyanna, the one that had haunted him all day, lay flat on the surface in front of him.

He’d spent years in this world—manipulating, negotiating, protecting. His life had always been about control, never about care. He’d kept his heart locked away, buried under the weight of duty and survival.

But everything had changed the moment he met her.

The following day, Vincenzo met with Matteo at one of their more discreet locations—a private office in an unmarked building near the outskirts of the city.

“De Lucas are making their move tonight,” Matteo said without preamble. “We’ve got a tip-off about an ambush.”

Vincenzo leaned forward, his expression calculating. “Where?”

“Downtown. We’ve secured the location, but we’ll need backup.”

Vincenzo’s eyes narrowed. “We can’t risk it. The De Lucas have no idea what they’re dealing with.”

Matteo raised an eyebrow. “And Elleyanna? She’s still a liability, Vincenzo. If they know you care about her, they’ll use her to get to you.”

Vincenzo’s jaw clenched. The very thought made his blood boil. “I don’t give a damn about their games. I’ll handle it, Matteo. But you need to make sure she stays in the dark.”

Matteo studied him for a moment, his expression unreadable. “You’re letting her close to you. That’s a dangerous move.”

“I’m aware,” Vincenzo said, his voice cold. “But I’ll protect her. No matter what it costs me.”

Why He Protects Her

Later that evening, Vincenzo stood outside Elleyanna’s apartment building, his mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.

He had always kept his world separate—his business, his family, his emotions. But the moment Elleyanna entered his life, everything had become complicated.

When he first saw her in his classroom, he had been struck by her intensity, her intelligence. She didn’t seek approval or try to fit in with the others. She questioned him, challenged him, and that intrigued him more than he cared to admit.

Vincenzo wasn’t sure when he had started caring about Elleyanna this much. Maybe it had been when she first looked at him with those innocent eyes, unaware of the danger surrounding her. Or maybe it had been the way she’d stood up to him, never once letting fear control her actions.

But whatever it was, he knew one thing for sure: He would protect her at all costs. Even if it meant putting his own life at risk. Even if it meant breaking every rule he had set for himself.

As the night fell, Vincenzo drove Elleyanna to a safe house on the outskirts of town. The air was thick with tension, the weight of what was about to unfold hanging over them.

“Are you sure this is necessary?” Elleyanna asked, her voice tinged with frustration as she glanced at him from the passenger seat.

“I’m sure,” Vincenzo replied, his voice clipped. “The De Lucas have made their move. It’s better if you stay out of harm’s way.”

Elleyanna didn’t argue. She knew this wasn’t a conversation she could win, especially when the stakes were so high. But the idea of being hidden away, locked up for her own safety, didn’t sit well with her.

“Do you always make these decisions for people?” she asked quietly.

Vincenzo glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “I do when their lives are on the line.”

Her gaze softened, though her frustration lingered. “You think I’m just a pawn, don’t you?”

Vincenzo’s jaw tightened at the implication. “That’s not what this is about.”

“Then what is it about?” she asked, her voice low, almost pained.

His grip on the steering wheel tightened. “It’s about keeping you alive.”

The Final Gamble

As they approached the safe house, Vincenzo parked and turned to face her. “I don’t want you to understand this world. I want to keep you away from it. But you’re already too close. You’ve already crossed the line. And I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure you’re safe, even if it means making you hate me.”

Elleyanna stared at him, the weight of his words settling heavily in her chest. For the first time since this madness began, she saw the true extent of his commitment to her safety.

She didn’t know whether she should feel grateful or trapped.

“Vincenzo,” she began, her voice trembling, “I don’t need you to save me. I need you to trust me.”

His gaze softened, but he remained silent for a long moment. “I can’t, Elleyanna. Not when you’re this exposed. You’re not just a student anymore. You’re my responsibility.”

She swallowed hard, fighting the urge to cry. “I’m not your responsibility. I’m my own person. I always have been.”

For a moment, Vincenzo didn’t know how to respond. The words seemed to hang between them, a tension neither of them could resolve.

Finally, he said, “I’m not doing this because I want to, Elleyanna. I’m doing it because I have no choice.”
