"The time has come, welcome to our first event"
I was slightly tired the next day after staying up late and watching horror movies with Tory but that didn't stop the adrenaline and excitement shooting through my whole body.
I stood next to Kwon and Tory on the mat as I let my eyes flick to each of the different dojos in the room.
My eyes landed on the Iron Dragon, one of the strongest looking teams, their dangerous glares and tense stances giving me the impression that they weren't here to muck around and that they were here to win.
That was good because it would give me a challenge. When it came to tournaments and karate, I was very competitive.
I pull my gaze away from the group in the dark green gi's, fidgeting with the belt of my black gi, my jaw slightly clenched.
"I hope you're all well rested and ready for a new and unique competition. We call it captains war"
My eyes flick to Kwon, us sharing a knowing glance. The weight of the tournament pressing in, as I feel the pulse of adrenaline starting to rise more within me. Kwon's stance shifts slightly, his body just as tense as mine, his gaze sharpening as he's clearly eager to get on the mat.
My gaze sharpens as well, the urge to fight filling me.
"We told you how important your captain would be, so let's see how well you protect them. Four dojos will take the mat, only one will be left standing. If you hit the mat, you're out. If one of your captain hits the mat, your whole team is out for this round"
I swallow hardly, the rules only adding to the pressure slightly.
I feel a nudge on my arm as I look to my side.
"You got this, just remember what your mother taught us" Kwon whispers to me confidently, a hint of softness in his eyes.
I nod slowly, my eyes flicking back to the man standing in the middle of the mat in front of us, my mind racing.
For a moment, it's hard to take in this version of Kwon, who's always been an asshole to me, always mocking and challenging me. But today, there's no arrogance in his tone, only a quiet support I wasn't expecting.
His words hit harder than I thought they would, giving me the reminder of everything my mother taught me, everything I've trained for.
I take a deep breath, grounding myself, the weight of the moment settling over me. Despite his usual arrogance, there's something different about Kwon today. Something almost genuine.
I can't let that distract me now, though. It's time to focus. I have a fight to win.
"Check the boards to see your groups, decided by random draw. Group A, you're up"
My head turns to the side, my eyes flicking to the massive screen seeing that we were up against the Iron Dragons, Miyagi Do and another team.
Our team moves to our corner, huddling in a circle.
"We take Miyagi Do first, they're the weakest" Kwon says, his eyes flickering between our team.
I nod
"Let them come to us, then we can fight the other dojos" I say, clenching my fists ever so slightly.
"That won't work, I know them. They're going to protect the egg. We need to attack, break their front line and get to their captains" Tory says.
