The drive to work was smooth, both of them trying to get to know each other a bit. They left quite early so the street weeny filled with people yet. Suddenly the driver noticed a car in the rear view mirror.
"Sir there's a car behind us. It's been following us since we left the house."
Both of them turned to look. Tara's heart began to race.
"Maybe they're just going the same way as us." She said with innocence.
Vincent ignored her and turned back to the driver, "Lose them."
The driver smashed on the gas petal and floored it. "Yes sir." The driver took a few random turns, in the hope of losing the person that was tailing them but it was no use. Whoever this person was, mirrored every single turn. These assholes were too persistent.
The realization that they were definitely being followed finally dawned on Tara. Her beat kept pounding. She couldn't believe she was in this crazy situation.
Suddenly gunshots rang out.
In a loud scream, "VINCENT!! THEY'RE SHOOTING AT US."
The driver sped up and continued trying to dodge the bullets that were coming at them. Things began to escalate when Vincent pulled out his gun and started to shoot back. Tara sank low in the seat with her hands over her ears, trying not to hear the gunshots.
"FASTER!!!" Vincent screamed to the driver. "I'm going as fast as i can." The driver responded.
Vincent continued to shoot and finally, one of the bullets hit the car windshield making them swerve off the road. "I THINK THAT I HIT ONE OF THEM!" He yelled.
Tara was still in disbelief and frightened out of her mind. "Did he just kill someone?" She thought. But she knew that she shouldn't be surprised after what she witnessed last night in the alley.
The driver glanced in the rear view mirror, "We've lost them sir." Vincent was pulled back into the car by Tara.
"What the fuck was that Vincent?" She was angry. More angry than she's ever been. Her life was in imminent danger and that was something that she didn't know if she could handle. But once she seen how incredibly calm Vincent was, all of her anger and fear subsided. She was so impressed, that all she could do was stare at him with admiration.
He noticed her staring, "Why are you looking at me like that Tara?"
"You're not scared. Why aren't you scared?" She was curious, worried even. How could he not be afraid of what just happened? They were shot at! That would put fear in anyone's heart.
He chuckled, "Tara. This is my life. I tried to tell you that being with me is dangerous. What did you think i meant?"
He was right. He did warn her. And even though she knew that she shouldn't have been surprised, she was.
"I know but it's still impressive how this didn't phase you." She said with admiration glint of admiration in her eyes.
"Like i said this is my life. If someone saw me afraid, then they would know that i have a weakness. And in this life, you can't have a weakness. People can hurt you that way." He said harshly but firm.
In that moment, she knew this was real and really dangerous but now she was ready to face whatever this world would throw at her.
