Once we reached his office, he opened the door for me, his hand never leaving my shoulder as he ushered me inside. I hesitated for just a moment before stepping through the threshold. As I did, I glanced back at Kent, and for a brief second, I caught the flicker of a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. It was barely there—gone as soon as I noticed it—but the sight of it sent a chill down my spine.
"Make sure to turn off your phone" Kent ordered out, "We don't want any disruptions"
I frowned and looked down at my phone, having only just getting it back off Toma, I felt uncomfortable turning it off but I reluctantly agreed. I glanced nervously in Kents direction, reeling he doesn't waste time with pleasantries.
"Don't worry," Kent said smoothly, closing and locking the door behind us with a soft click. "You're in good hands now."
Kent came towards me, his hands clasped behind his back, standing a meres arm length away I looked with uncertainty up at him. His authoritarian persona always made him someone I didn't feel particularly close to. Kent was more of an acquaintance and friend of a friend, rather than someone I knew personally. Now I was alone with him in the locked room, i felt distinctly uncomfortable and began to wish Toma was here.
It was then, Kent bent forward and lifted my hair away from my neck with his gloved hand, his fingers lightly tracing the necklace. I stiffened, feeling awkward being so intimately close to him
"Hmm? How odd! Your perfume is quite strong and not particularly feminine" Kent commented curiously, "Could it be Toma is marking his territory. Interesting" he amused out, straightening to his full imposing height.
My face flushed up bright red, remembering then that Toma had indeed sprayed me with his cologne that morning. I hugged my arm, glancing to the door wanting to leave.
'You seem tense... I want you to feel safe and relaxed here" Kent offered a reassuring smile that didn't reach his eyes, "Allow me to make you a cup of tea to soothe your nerves" I opened my mouth to decline but he stopped me his his hand on my shoulder, "I insist" he said pressing my shoulder to make me sit down.
I sat, stiff-backed, on a sofa in the middle of Kent's lab. The office was smaller than I expected, especially given Kent's pristine, methodical reputation. A neat stack of books lined his desk, arranged alphabetically. Behind him, degrees and certificates in rigid black frames were pinned to the wall, each one boasting of his academic prowess. The fluorescent lighting reflected off his glasses, making his eyes unreadable as he settled into his chair across from me.
I fidgeted feeling uncomfortable, as if the air itself held me hostage. Silence hung thick around us, stretching uncomfortably, broken only by the steady hum of his equipment in the background. Kent, perched on his rolling chair behind his desk and leaned forward, his gaze dissecting me like I was nothing more than one of his lab specimens. That gaze made my skin prickle, cold and watchful, pinning me there with the force of something disturbingly clinical.
How had I let myself get into this? I should've left the moment Toma stormed off, while Kent's offer still hung in the air, untouched. The whole room felt wrong—too cramped, too bright, too full of him. I couldn't shake the urge to stand up and push my way out, to run somewhere safe and let this entire afternoon melt away into a haze of yesterday. My friends. I just wanted to go see my friends. I wanted to collapse into their arms, to let the ache of Toma's suffocating words slip out in quiet tears. But I wasn't anywhere close to them now; I was here, trapped under Kent's disconcerting stare, playing along in his strange game.
"I didn't come here to do this, you know," I finally mumbled, unable to look him in the eye. My voice sounded as small and hollow as I felt. "I... I just wanted a little space. Time to think."
