Rick walked inside with a soft sigh, he placed his hat on the hook and dropped his lunchbox on the countertop. Daryl was in the kitchen getting dinner ready, Carl on his heels, ever since he had gotten pregnant Carl didn't like to leave his mothers side. Rick sat on the couch and leaned his head back against the couch, his muscles burned as he leaned forward enough to pull his boots off.
"Dad's home." Daryl smiled softly as he booped Carl's nose, the eight and a half year old giggled and tried to reach for Daryl's nose, his hand didn't get that far so he just booped Daryl's rounded belly. Daryl ruffled Carl's hair with a smile and the pup ran off towards the living room. Daryl heard the pup squeal in excitement and Rick made an oof noise.
Daryl rounded the corner to watch them, Rick pulled Carl into his arms, holding him tightly. He rested his chin on Carl's head and turned the TV on, his smile fading once Carl could no longer see him. Daryl walked into the room with a soft frown, he gave Rick's forehead a soft kiss. Rick looked up at him and smiled faintly. "Dinner will be done soon." Daryl mumbled.
Rick nodded softly at him, and pulled Carl a bit closer, he brushed his lips against the pup's hair. Tears brimming in his eyes. "I love you Carl."
"I love you too dad!" Carl muttered, throwing his arms around his father. Rick's frown turned up just a bit, before Carl cuddled into his lap while the show flashed.
Daryl pursed his lips and headed back to the kitchen, he knew Rick wouldn't want to talk about it until their pup was down for bed.
Merle walked in the door not long after Rick, he pulled his own boots off and sat beside Rick. "Uncle Merle!" Carl chirped, jumping from his father's lap to his uncle's. A wide smile lit up on Merle's face, Rick leaned against Merle's shoulder and the alpha immediately noticed Rick's demeanor. He knew not to ask, not until Carl was in bed.
Merle turned and gave Rick's forehead a kiss. Their relationship was more hidden, even Carl didn't pick up on the actual care they had for one another. To Carl his uncle lived in the same house with him and his parents, but Merle was more intertwined in their relationship than he knew.
"Dinner!" Daryl called, poking his head around the corner.
Carl went running into the dining room, Merle pushed himself to his feet, and then offered his hand to Rick. Rick let out another deep sigh, and clasped hands with Merle. Merle pulled him up to his feet. Merle pulled Rick into his arms. "Are you okay?"
"Yeh.. I'm fine."
"Tough shift?"
"Yeah..." Rick muttered into his chest. "Real tough.."
"Talk when the kid is down for bed?"
"Yes," Rick muttered, "but not until then."
Merle nodded, giving his forehead another kiss before pulling back. The two walked into the kitchen side by side.
Carl was piling his plate full of spaghetti and garlic bread. Daryl smiled and gave Rick a look, Rick blinked at him to let him know he was okay. Carl chatted about school and asked Merle about his day at the auto-shop. It was obvious to even Carl something was up with his dad, sometimes he was sad when he came home from work. Carl was convinced being a cop was a hard job, and something he didn't really want to do, even if it seemed cool.
He didn't like when his dad was sad.
Carl happily finished eating his spaghetti, and gave his parents and uncle hugs before racing up for bed. "I'll be back, going to get him tucked in." Daryl smiled and got up. He placed a hand on his belly and made his way up the stairs.
"You okay?" Merle asked once the two of them heard Carl's bedroom door close. "What happened?"
Rick sighed. "The things people can do to their pups.... I- I know you and Daryl lived through some things... I just.. The things.. The things that I have seen.. The calls I have to arrive too sometimes..."
"Ah.. A call with a pup, I know those ones are always the worst for you."
"Yeah..." Rick put his head in his hands, trying not to cry. Daryl made his way down the stairs and wrapped his arms around Rick's back. Daryl gave him a few kisses along his neck and jaw.
"I've got a bath started for you." Daryl muttered against his neck, Daryl didn't specifically want to know what was wrong, he just knew something was wrong and if Rick needed him he would be there.
Rick looked up at him with a smile on his face, he felt so lucky despite the fact he knew sometimes when he came home he was in a bad mood and would bring down the feelings in the house. Rick followed him up the stairs and into the bathroom, Merle not far behind. Merle helped Rick undress, caressing his muscles as he pulled his clothes free.
Daryl helped Rick into the tub, kissing him softly. "We are here for you, you know."
Rick reached up, squeezing his hand softly. "Thank you."
Daryl dropped to his knees slowly, he scrubbed his back and chest while Merle shampooed his hair. Rick sighed, a soft smile on his lips. He was sure glad they were here for him, he loved them so much and he was so lucky they were there to support him. No matter what the situation was.
Rick smiled softly, no matter how hard his day was he knew his family would be there for him. They would love him, and support him.
