Everyone's gathered around, afraid of who the anonymous Mother will do first. Whispering to each other.
Every year, most of the Mothers are cruel and kill everyone. But I hoped this wouldn't be the case.
"What if she tries to make us do something impossible?!"
"Oh, hush. That's against the rules."
"Do you think people might form alliances with Mother?"
"I doubt it."
Everyone was consoling each other, everyone's voices silenced once the announcements came on.
The lights shut off, signalling that they were choosing mother. Footsteps echoing throughout the large auditorium that everyone had to stay in until the end of the game.
Then, a sound came on.. Mother's voice.
"Mother... May we sit down?" A person asks, everyone afraid of her answer.
"You may." Says the cheery voice that had a terrifying undertone to it, even it made me shiver.
The lights turned on, everyone looking around to see who was missing, but no one found a trace.
Mother seemed to be in disguise.
Everyone sat down in their seats, whispering to each other, I heard Paisley ask me something.
"Do you think Mother will be a good Mother this year?" She asks, the blonde hair, pale girl looking scared.
I kiss her cheek, hugging my lover close, nodding my head. "I think so, she sounds nice enough."
A lie. I really didn't know, but I didn't want to scare Paisley. She was already shaken up enough from last year's game.
I absolutely despise this dumb tradition, who would make kids suffer and watch their best friends and families get killed? The government, of course. Wanting to show off their stupid power and show that they were in control.
I can't say that out loud, though. I'd get executed in front of everyone for that. They wouldn't like me saying that.
So, I guess I hope I'll keep my mouth shut until me and Pais turn 18. It's only a few more months and then me and her are safe from this hell.
I honestly couldn't care less about anyone else here besides me and her. She's my world, my one true love who hasn't left my side.
And I won't lose her just yet. Put that on my tombstone.
