It was getting late, the time on the huge clock showed, the chairs going into the floor and blankets and pillows being dropped into everyone's hands with robotic claws. It was tradition for everyone to stay the first night in the auditorium until morning.
Paisley sat next to me, hugging and being lovey dovey like she usually did on the first night of the game. It was her trauma getting the best of her.
"If I show you a bunch of affection, then when I die, it won't hurt as bad." Paisley said two years ago. I remembered those words by heart.
"Don't be silly, Pais. You won't die." I reassured her that night, Paisley only tilting her head and humming.
"You never know, Riri.. Mother is getting more and more hungry each day."
Now, you may be asking "Why did she say that?".
Mother feeds on the souls that die in the game. Whoever gets chosen as mother is possessed by her, giving them that cheery voice.
But, it is up to them to accept and who to deny. It was always a secret who was possessed.
Paisley knocked me out of my train of thought by how she hugged me and laid us down on the floor with our blankets.
I nuzzled into her neck, no room between us as we cuddled close. She made me feel warm inside like the first time we met.
God, I love her.
We soon fell asleep, feeling somewhat peaceful despite these hard times. Mother scared us all.
I woke up to a scream and then a bang, the lights turning on to reveal Amanda, on the ground, eyes wide and lifeless as her head bled uncontrollably.
Mother had gotten to her.
Many people cried and screamed at the sight, "She just asked if she could use the bathroom!!" Someone cried out, that being Ashlyn, Amanda's cousin.
Paisley held my hand, burying her face into my chest at the sight, refusing to look at Amanda. It reminded her of her sister.
Yes, Paisley had lost her sister to Mother three years back, it changed her forever.
The lights turned off for a moment and then turned back on, Ashlyn's scream could be heard.
"NO!! GIVE HER BACK!!!" She screeched in the dark, soon being silenced, missing along with Amanda's corpse.
It seemed the people had taken them away.
"Player 57 and 89 eliminated." Says mother's voice on the speakers.
I look down at Paisley and sigh, kissing the blonde's forehead rock her slightly to calm her down as we sat down and the lights dimming down again as everyone calmed down.
They were used to it by now.
When I got Paisley to go back to sleep, I sighed and looked down at her beautiful face. I laid her down and tucked her in.
This was going to be a long night.
