The hospital room buzzed with quiet activity. Risha rested on the bed, her complexion still pale but her breathing steady. Sol sat by her side, her hand gently brushing a strand of hair from Risha's face. Across the room, Ashan paced, his worry evident in his furrowed brow.
"You need to sit down," Sol said softly, though her voice carried a sharp edge. "You're making me nervous."
Ashan stopped mid-step, running a hand through his hair. "I can't just sit here. She was attacked right in front of us, and we couldn't do anything. How do you expect me to stay calm?"
Sol sighed, her gaze never leaving Risha. "I'm worried too, but we need to stay strong for her. She needs us now more than ever."
Ashan looked at Sol, and for the first time, a hint of understanding passed between them. Whatever differences they might have had were set aside for the woman they both cared about.
Meanwhile, in another part of the city, Miri and Aaron were hard at work. Miri's determination was evident as she sifted through an ancient spell book, searching for clues about the attacker. Aaron stood nearby, his arms crossed and his expression serious.
"This wasn't just a random act," Miri said, her voice steady but tinged with anger. "Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing."
Aaron nodded. "And they were targeting her specifically. The precision of that attack—it was meant to harm but not kill. They wanted to send a message."
Miri clenched her fists. "Eron's influence is spreading. We need to figure out who he sent."
Aaron placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We will. Together."
Their research was interrupted by a flicker of movement in the corner of the room. Ursula emerged from the shadows, her expression grave.
"You're on the right track," she said, her voice low. "The attacker was one of Eron's underlings, a rogue immortal who thrives on chaos."
"Do you know their name?" Miri asked urgently.
Ursula shook her head. "Not yet. But I've been tracking their energy signature. They're powerful but reckless. That's their weakness."
Aaron stepped forward. "What can we do to stop them?"
Ursula hesitated, her gaze shifting between Miri and Aaron. "Stay close to Risha. Protect her at all costs. Eron's forces will try again, but this time, we'll be ready."
Miri narrowed her eyes. "You keep saying 'we.' Who are you really, Ursula?"
Ursula's lips pressed into a thin line. "That's not important right now. What matters is keeping both of you safe."
Before Miri could press further, Ursula faded back into the shadows, leaving them alone once more.
Sol and Ashan worked seamlessly to ensure Risha's comfort. Sol brewed tea from a flask she'd brought, her movements careful and precise. Ashan adjusted Risha's blankets, checking her temperature with an almost obsessive frequency.
When Risha finally stirred, her eyelids fluttering open, relief washed over both of them.
"Hey," Sol said softly, her voice filled with emotion. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I got hit by a truck," Risha murmured, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "But I'll live."
Ashan chuckled, though his eyes glistened. "Don't scare us like that again, okay?"
Risha looked between them, her heart swelling with gratitude. "Thank you. Both of you."
Sol and Ashan exchanged a glance, their silent rivalry momentarily replaced by a shared sense of relief.
Miri entered the room later that evening, her face a mixture of exhaustion and determination. She hugged Risha tightly, her voice trembling as she said, "You scared the life out of me."
"I'm sorry," Risha whispered. "I didn't mean to."
Miri pulled back, brushing a tear from her cheek. "We're going to figure out who did this. Aaron and I are already working on it."
"Be careful," Risha said, her voice firm despite her weakened state. "I don't want you getting hurt."
Miri nodded, her resolve clear. "Don't worry about me. Just focus on getting better."
Later that night, as Risha slept, both Sol, and Ashan were guarding her. Aaron and Miri gathered in a nearby lounge to discuss their next steps. Ursula, unseen, watched from a distance, her presence a protective shadow.
Aaron spread out a map, pointing to various locations marked in glowing runes. "These are the places where the attacker's energy was detected. They're moving fast, but they're not hiding their tracks well." Miri leaned forward, her analytical mind already at work. "If we can predict their next move, we can set a trap."
"And Sol and Ashan can stay with Risha. You and I can split our time between protecting her and tracking the attacker."
Aaron nodded. He was genuinely surprised at how much Miri had matured over time.
As the night deepened, a soft wind whispered through the hospital corridors, carrying with it a sense of foreboding. The battle was far from over, but for now, they had each other—and that was a start.
