Jake couldn't shake the thought of Raya after their late-night call. For days, her voice echoed in his mind, pulling him into memories he couldn’t forget. The distance between them no longer felt like just miles; it was a gap he was determined to close.
Jake stared at his laptop, an idea forming. "What if I just… moved there?" he thought. New York wasn’t just a city; it was her city. He quickly searched for colleges offering transfers for engineering students.
Within a week, Jake applied to a prestigious engineering college in New York and started gathering the necessary documents. It was impulsive, but he knew staying in the same city as Raya was the only way to make things right.
One evening, Jake called Raya. She answered, sounding wary but curious.
“Hey, Jake. What’s up?”
“I’ve been thinking about our last conversation,” he began. “And, well, I’ve decided to move to New York.”
Raya froze, her heart skipping a beat. “You… what?”
“I’m transferring to a college there,” Jake explained. “I want to start fresh.”
“Jake, that’s—” She struggled for words. “That’s insane. You’re leaving everything behind?”
“Not everything,” he said softly. “I’ll still have you there. At least, I hope I will.”
“Jake,” Raya sighed, her tone mixed with disbelief and something she couldn’t name. “You can’t just uproot your life for me.”
“I’m not doing this just for you,” he insisted. “New York has great opportunities. And yes, seeing you is a huge part of it, but it’s not the only reason.”
Raya didn’t know how to respond. “When are you coming?” she asked finally.
“In two weeks,” Jake said, his voice steady. “And I was hoping… maybe I could crash at your place? At least until I figure out my accommodation.”
“What? No way!” she exclaimed.
“Please, Raya,” he pleaded. “Just until I find a place. I’ll sleep on the couch, stay out of your way. I swear.”
“You’re unbelievable,” she muttered, shaking her head.
“So, is that a yes?” Jake asked hopefully.
“It’s a maybe,” Raya said, her tone exasperated.
Two weeks later, Jake landed in New York. He took a cab to Raya’s apartment, his heart racing the entire way.
When he knocked on her door, Raya opened it cautiously. Her expression was unreadable.
“You’re really here,” she said, stepping aside to let him in.
“I told you I would be,” Jake replied, his signature grin in place.
Her apartment was modest but cozy, with textbooks and notes scattered on the coffee table. Jake placed his bag down and looked around.
“This is nice,” he said. “Feels like you.”
“Don’t get too comfortable,” Raya warned. “You’re only here temporarily.”
Jake laughed. “Noted.”
Later, as they sat on the couch, Jake tried to break the tension.
“So… how have you been?”
“Busy,” Raya replied shortly.
“Are you always this warm and welcoming?” he teased, trying to lighten the mood.
