The weeks were slipping by fast. Raya and her friends balanced their study sessions with occasional hangouts, knowing this was the final stretch before the boards. With just a month left, their study routines were intense, but Sunday brought a much-needed break.
When Lili suggested a night out, everyone immediately agreed. "One last chill before the boards consume us," Josh joked in their group chat.
Mimi, who had surprisingly integrated herself into their circle, chimed in. "Count me in too!" Raya sighed, rolling her eyes at her phone. "Of course, she’d join," she muttered to herself but didn’t object.
Everyone gathered at Jake’s house before heading out. Mimi arrived last, dressed in a striking outfit, making an impression as always. Jake’s parents greeted her warmly.
"Mimi, you look lovely," Jake’s mom said.
"Thank you, Aunty," Mimi replied sweetly, casting a glance at Jake. Raya stood to the side, feeling oddly out of place. Jake noticed her expression and walked over, whispering, "Ignore her. She’s just trying to show off." Raya chuckled lightly.
As everyone piled into the car, Mimi made sure to sit beside Jake, much to Raya’s annoyance.
The group arrived at the beachside park, their laughter filling the cool night air. They played games, ate from the food stalls, and teased each other relentlessly.
"Josh, stop eating all the fries!" Lili scolded, snatching the plate from him.
"I’m bulking up for exams," Josh joked, earning laughter from everyone.
Mimi, however, seemed to have her own agenda. She clung to Jake’s side, laughing at his jokes and subtly brushing her hand against his arm. Raya tried to focus on her friends but couldn’t help noticing Mimi’s every move.
"Hey, Raya," Kren called, pulling her into the conversation. "What’s your plan for after the boards? Still thinking about medicine?"
Raya nodded, smiling. "Yeah, I’ve got a long way to go, but I’m determined. What about you?"
"I’ll probably join Dad’s business," Kren said casually. "But I’m still figuring things out."
Meanwhile, Mimi trailed behind Jake as they all walked along the beach. Suddenly, she let out a small yelp. "Jake, I think I twisted my ankle!"
Jake, being his kind self, immediately went to her side. "Are you okay?" he asked, crouching down to check her foot.
"It hurts," Mimi said, her voice dripping with drama.
Jake lifted her effortlessly, carrying her to a nearby bench while the others watched. Lili leaned toward Raya, whispering, "She’s so fake. Did you see how she ‘fell’?" Raya forced a smile but stayed silent, her chest tightening.
As Jake checked Mimi’s foot, Raya kept her distance, trying to focus on the waves crashing against the shore. Kren walked over, handing her a drink.
"Hey, you okay?" he asked.
"Yeah," she replied softly, glancing toward Jake and Mimi. "Just tired, I guess."
Jake finally rejoined the group, helping Mimi walk. Raya avoided his gaze, plastering a neutral expression on her face.
The ride home was unusually quiet. Mimi occupied the passenger seat next to Jake, chatting away, while Raya sat in the back with Lili and Josh. Her mind raced with thoughts, but she kept her mouth shut.
"You’re awfully quiet," Lili whispered, nudging her.
"Just tired," Raya replied, forcing a smile.
When they dropped Raya off, Jake gave her a lingering look. "Night, Raya," he said softly. She nodded, her emotions tightly controlled.
As Jake drove away, Raya stood on her doorstep, staring after the car. She clenched her fists, her thoughts swirling.
"I know what you’re doing, Mimi," she muttered under her breath. "But I’m not going to let you win."
