The next morning, Ava woke up bright and early, her energy fully restored after the sugar crash and a good night's sleep. She bounded out of bed before either Alastor or Lucifer stirred, eager to start the day. By the time Lucifer shuffled into the kitchen in his robe, rubbing sleep from his eyes, he found Ava already rummaging through the pantry, climbing a stool to reach the higher shelves.
"What are you doing up so early, sweetheart?" he asked with a yawn, leaning against the counter.
Ava turned her head, her face innocent but her hands not-so-much. She was clutching a bag of marshmallows, which she had apparently been trying to smuggle back to the living room. "Nothing," she said quickly, stuffing the bag behind her back.
Lucifer raised a brow. "Ava."
She hesitated before relenting, pulling the bag out sheepishly. "I just wanted to make breakfast... with marshmallows. Like s'mores but without the fire. And maybe some chocolate syrup."
Lucifer sighed but smiled despite himself. "I appreciate the initiative, but no marshmallows for breakfast two days in a row, okay? Why don't you help me make pancakes instead?"
"Okay, Daddy," she said, abandoning the bag. She hopped off the stool and took his hand.
The morning passed mostly without incident, but as the day wore on, trouble seemed inevitable. Lucifer and Alastor had retreated to the office to discuss a few managerial things about the hotel, leaving Ava to entertain herself in the lobby. She had been explicitly told to stay out of the kitchen after her marshmallow escapade, but temptation got the better of her.
It wasn't long before Ava had convinced herself that she could whip up a batch of cupcakes "as a surprise." She gathered some ingredients, not entirely sure what she needed, and started mixing things in a bowl. Unfortunately, in her excitement, she knocked over a container of flour, and the white powder exploded everywhere—on her, the counter, and the floor. Determined not to get caught, she tried cleaning it up with water, only to make a paste-like mess that clung to the floor and her hands.
When Alastor came to check on her, following the sound of clattering pots, he froze in the doorway, his eyes widening as he took in the scene. Ava was standing in the middle of the flour-covered chaos, her face and hands smeared with batter, trying to wipe the floor with a dish towel.
"Ava!" Alastor's voice was stern but not overly loud, startling her.
She froze, clutching the towel. "I was just trying to make something nice!" she protested, her bottom lip trembling.
"This is not how we do things," Alastor said, stepping into the mess carefully. "Look at this disaster! You could have hurt yourself!"
Lucifer appeared moments later, drawn by the commotion. He took one look at the kitchen and groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Ava, what did we say about staying out of the kitchen?"
Her eyes filled with tears. "I just wanted to make something for you and Daddy! I'm sorry!"
Lucifer crouched down to her level. "I know you wanted to do something nice, but you need to listen when we set rules, Ava. You could have gotten hurt, or worse."
Alastor sighed, kneeling beside Lucifer. "We're not angry that you wanted to make cupcakes, sweetheart. But you can't just start baking without us."
Ava sniffled and nodded. "I won't do it again. Promise."
Lucifer softened, brushing some flour from her hair. "Alright. We believe you. But you're helping us clean this up."
Alastor nodded in agreement. "Every last bit of it, Ava."
With a pout, Ava agreed, grabbing a mop as Lucifer and Alastor began cleaning alongside her. By the time the kitchen was back in order, Ava was exhausted but relieved her daddies weren't mad anymore.
To make it up to her, Alastor decided to bake the cupcakes she'd wanted, letting her assist under supervision. Despite the earlier chaos, the day ended sweetly with a batch of perfectly baked cupcakes and the three of them sharing laughs over a messy but memorable afternoon.
